Winters in Sheridan, Wyo. are much too severe for a critter with only skin and fuzz on the pate. With a little help from the Division of Wildlife Resources and the National Wild Turkey Federation, birds were trucked down the road to new accommodations in southeastern Utah. Feathered conscripts were divided into groups and released Jan. 29 onto North Beaver Mesa, La Sal Creek and Pack Creek in the La Sal Mountains near Moab. Another group went further south to Elk Ridge. The new immigrants will boost existing populations already in place. Brad Crompton, wildlife biologist in the DWRs Southeastern Region, said the new turkeys, provide genetic diversity to existing flocks, in addition to enhancing existing populations. All immigrant turkeys were of the Merriams variety, which is better suited for mountain forests and drainages. Brett Johnson, NWTF regional director, said that in partnership with the DWR, the NWTF plans to boost Utahs wild turkey population to more than 200,000 birds in the next 10 years. Last year, 950 turkeys were brought into the state. If all goes well, well be getting another 1,000 this winter, Johnson said. The NWTF has committed $90,000 over the next three years to reach our goal for Utah." In the last few months, wild turkeys have been introduced near Tboele, Ogden, the Uintah Basin, the San Juan Mountains and near Moab. Future transplants are in the making, with birds coming from California, Kansas, South Dakota and Wyoming. Some Utah populations are doing so well that birds are being trapped from these flocks to pioneer other promising sites around the state. Sid Wilcox, NWTF Utah Chapter president, said the federation has targeted Utah for extensive wild turkey introductions. The NWTF not only helps the DWR with transplant funding but also sponsors habitat projects across the state. The NWTF also pays for many of the radio transmitters needed for turkey research. Its our goal to have Rio Grande wild turkey permits able over the counter in the next two or three years, Wilcox said. -- that you have scon redrock splendor, now own a piece in the shadow of the famous Castle Rock! Traffic accidents are the leading cause of death for all children ages five-1as well as for older teens and young adults, a fact that can be linked at least in part to the reality that as many as nine out of 10 children are improperly restrained in vehicles. One of the most common mistakes parents make in restraining children is that they dont understand the need for different stages of child restraint use throughout a childs growth. Since many state laws only cover children through age three, many parents assume older kids are safe in just a seat belt. The message parents need to convertible seats learn is this: When children outgrow forward-facin- g at about age four and 40 pounds, they need to be restrained in beltpositioning booster seats until they are big enough to fit in an adult seat belt. FAITH SAYS ONE 7( t is unfortunate WAY TO LOVE THY NEIGHBOR IS TO BE QUIET that due to modern technology and selfish attitudes, were living in an age in which quiet neighbors are becoming increasingly scarce. Toy manufacturers dream up ever noisier devices, to be purchased by parents who wont even hear them above their own unmuffled motorcycles and the latest rock sounds blasting from their bathtub-sizstereo speakers. However, the neighbors will; and all of this may consign to a purgatory those hapless souls next door who might want to hear their own brand of music or their TV programs, or just enjoy a little peace and quiet in their homes. Throughout the Bible we are told to love our neighbors, so if your faith hasn't yet taught you and your family to show some consideration for them, let its lessons remind you of this responsibility; and help you remember that they might appreciate a little silence once in a while. e high-decib- el 15 By Samuel A. WHEN, WHERE, AND HOW DID THE HOLY SPIRIT COME UPON THE APOSTLES? In Acts 2 we read of the Spirit's coming: WHEN He came, WHERE He came, HOW He came, and to WHOM He came. Christ, having ac- complished the object of His mission to this earth, ascended back to the Father from the Mount of Olives; and the apostles, after His ascension, returned to (Acts 1:12). There they waited ten days. Then, on the day of Pentecost, God sent the Holy Spirit on His mission, in the tity of Jerusalem, to the apostles only, to the 120 disciples. "And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they the apostles of Acts 1:26 were all with one accord in one place.
