Show xnE SALT LAKE TRIBUNE, SUNDAY MORNING, SEPTEMBER 24, 192. Coaches Send Up, Macedonian'! Cry for Grid Squad Recruits Additional Players Needed to Build Strong serve and Campaign for Enlistments for Crimson Eleven Will Be Made., this little athlete has been running his teammates well. He will be playing his third year on the hill and will hold down the quarterback position this year,TUong with Champion and Brady. The latter nas not reported as yet, but great things are expected of this d ster on the hill. Champion and youngSmith play the same kind .of football and are fast as Ughtn ng on their feet. The larger fellows have had hard work of it to nail these shifty men. and they should be two of L tabs largest ground gainers. The University of Utah gridiron aspirants have been put through two weeks of the most strenuous work they have ever before tackled, and Coaches Fitzpatrick, Prince and Prouse are well pleased with the way that the men have taken to their task of trying to land the 1922 Rocky mountain conference honors at the University of Utah. There Is only one thing that is lacking, from the copchlng standpoint, and that Is the small number of men that have turned out for fractlce so far. The coaches have been crying for more men since the opening practices, and there are many large fellows in the school who are eligible fo the varsity team but who will not come out for it unless they believe they have a chance to land a first-teaberth on the aggregation. Competition makes teams, and coaches must have material to whip an hundred One aggregation into shape. men were expected at Cummings field when Fitzpatrick and Prince took the reins this season, and these men are waiting for more men to turn out this coming week, when the school worK gets under way. Those men w ho have been working har-have put evduring the last erything they have into the grind and the results of their long and consistent effort were shown in the scrimmage men against the frosh last week: as The well as did not know their signals few a they should, but after and bruises they fell right into line and before the end of the day were able to take the frosh back time and be again. This handful of men cannot expected to do it all and they will not do it all, unless they are pushed at all times for their positions on the team. The coaches and manager intend to comb the university for all of the big men. and these fellows will be taught football from the beginning to the end by the present coaching staff With an eight-tam- e schedule and. what is more, a real schedule more men must come out for the varsity squad, which has been weakened through ineligibility of last year s :tars and also because many ot last years pla.vers have gone on missions. The men that are now in suits are good football players, but a first team is only as strong as its reserve line, after all, and it is the substitute that U the valuable man on the lull. New Re- fair-haire- Velvet Halfbacks Promising. m two-wee- ' bone-head- I "Brick" Whitney and "Bish" Watkins have been showing stuff at the halfback positions and are also shifty on their feet, along with having the power to run Interference and hit the line. "Dutch Tauter and Denzil Lee are two more halfbacks who have been doing well. Morgan Mercer, last years sprinter and broad juniper, has played well in the early work and will make a valuable man for Utah. Archie Sutton has only been out for prac-- f tice a few nights and should prove a big factor In making the Crimson backfield go after their work harder this year. Sutton can play football if he puts hi mind to it, and Archie says that this is h p year. Hagen and Kvans have been shifted from the line and fullback positions and have done well at both places. Both are heavy men and have learned the art of carrying uhe ball and picking their holes well. These heavy men--, have also learned to hit an end in the way that he should be hit, and the formations should be able lo go out' much better than they have m the past. The Crimson l ne ia not giving the eoaxhes the trouble that the backfield U, and this is probably because the coaches have big Harvey Hancock to form their line arourul. Hancock is playing his fourth year on the hill and h!s work has been of the highest standard. He is always in the game and probably la the hardest worker on the Crimson squad. Hancock is out with that do or die spirit of hi this season and should land on the mythical conference eleven easilj. He will hold down the pivof position and will have Hagen and Ike Clarke to work along with him for this position.
