A. ,.,..9meiN 854 WITH NTT 6IJ LIMITED High; Michigan Utah Makes Improvement The use of of 1 per cent diethyl telluride bn gasoline as an anti- . knock compound has been reliably ieprt-edIt la said to eliminate carbon deposits and to produce greatly Increased efficiency when used In motors designed to Operate on very high compression. A special type of engine Is said to be required to produce these results, hence Its general use in motors will not be feasible unless the motor Industry should conform with the required type. This step in turn would be dependent on a supply of tellurium adequate to treat all the motor fuel. For this I60O tons of tellurium a year would lie required, and as the possible annual supply of tellurium from the present best known sources of copper refineries Is said to toe only about 125, OoO pounds g much larger supply must be developed, the discovery of new uses not dependent on So large a supply would result In wider utilisation of present resources. Tellurium Is usually associated with the more common element, selesvtum. Both of these elements are similar In many ways to sulphur, broad quantities of tellurium In the free state were found by early mlrieralogists, who, on account of its peculiar luster, named It metallum Native tellurium was examined by Muller von Hechenstein In 17x2, and at hit suggestion Klaproth, in 1798, made a Study of the tellurium ores and subfound they contained a metal-lik- e stance. He called this tellurium, from studied Hersellus the earth. 'telius, tellurium exhaustively In 1832. From Its oftemlcal nature tellurium Is now known to be a nomnetallic clement, belonging to the sulphur-oxyge- n group. Tellurium is most popularly known through Its occurrences In certain gold ores telluride which have been extensively mined in the Cripple Creek mining district, Colorado. lc. Bid. No ores are known that are rich enough In tellurium to permit mining and treatment for tellurium alone, even if the demand Increased to large proportions. It Is probable that the future supply will be derived as a byproduct from metallurgical processes as In the past. The present practice for recovering tellurium from the residues In copper refining Is wdl presented by lUkwrence Addleks In a 1921 publication, Copper Hcfinlng Briefly, the hot, alkaline solution obtained by leaching slag from the Dor furnace is acidified with sulphuric acid and agitated by air. Commercially pure tellurium Is precipitated and recovered by filtration Tellurium la a silver-whit- e solid with metallic luster, the crystalline form bebrittle and ing very easily powdered, says Mr. Horner's report. It has a specific gravity of 8.27. melts at 45 degrees Centigrade, and boils at red beat, giv ing off a golden yellow vapor when air Is excluded. When heated In air, tel lurium burns with a blue flame tinged with green, and evolves white vapors of tellurium dioxide. An amorphous form of tellurium, obtained by reduction and precipitation from solution, has a specific gravity of 6 016, and when heated la changed to the crystalline variety. Tellurium Is Insoluble In water, carbon disulphide. or hydrochloric acids, but it Is dissolved by nitric or concentrated acid. It does not tarnish in moist air, ts resistant to alkaline solutions, except concentrated KOH. but It Is dissolved by fused alkalies Its atomic weight ha been the subject of much controversy. but the value 177 5 has been The ihemlstry of generally accepted. tellurium Is similar to that of sulphur I forms three oxides TeO.
