Dead mining has been carried on In the vicinity for nearly half a century. In the , early days several mines were worked by convict labor, and the ruins of the old cells and exercising yards which were built of solid stone. Can still be seen at Geraldine, the principal town. Tho lead was smelted at a central smelting works, about three miles south of Geraldine The old stack is still standing on the top of a small hill, and can be seen miles Swsy from all directions. Tha lead was then carted about forty miles to Port Gregory, and loaded as ballast on tailing vessels going to England. The principal mine at work In this field Is the Surprise. This mins wss not worked in the esrly days, but has produced during the pest twelve months 000 tons of lead concentrate containing 10 pee cent lead. The lode is from 15 to 20 feet wide, and in places 8 to 12 feet of solid galena has been worked. It being only necessary to break the ore, raise It to the surface and bag it. The Surprise mine has only been worked for 100 feet vertically and for a distance of 180 feet along the lode, but the whole of the machinery, working expenses, and development work have been paid for from profits The clean ore Is bagged, and the other lode material is sluiced; in this way an output of over 100 tons of lead conoentrata per week has been maintained. Tbs sluice tailing contains about 13 cent lead, and will be treated again. per A mill has Just been completed, consisting of r, a three sets of rolls, four trommels four .
