The winter wheat crop of the district is now estimated at SI, 164, 000 bushels, as compared with 61,031.000 bushels a year ago. If weather conditions are favorable during the remainder of the growing season, the increase in the spring wheat crop will, however, compensate for approximately half of this deficiency, predictions Indicating that this crop will amount to 60.- 277.000 bushels, as compared with 46,426,-oObushels a year ago. The statement goes on to say: "The range conditions throughout the district are better at this time tnan tor several years. The movement of cattle and sheep to ranges, however, has been slow, due to the late spring end the lack of early grasses. The wool cup In the district Is averaging pound per fleece than In 1919. It seemed that stocks displayed considerable firmness In the face of unfavorable factor. For one thing, call money rose to 14 per cent, the highest rats Blnce the latter were depart of April, and time funds cent. These withrecedett stocks generally fractionally The out disclosing any real weakness. dividend cut indicated that the directors desired to conserve cash, and the collateral explanation was that business has not maintained the improved prospects which were held out in the buying' movement of April and early May. Trading In stocks of all classes remained almost solely In the hands of the professionals. to It la Becoming more difficult dally discover any new and genuine Influences at work In the security markets. In-Is vestment business in bonds and stocks reported as nominal, declining to the hopea that June dullness will be succeeded by fair degree of activity when July Interest and dividend money come Into the market. The repressive Influence of scarce and dear bank funds continues to act in coand operation with industrial uncertainty rather conflicting crop newa to hold back There speculative operations in stocks. will reis reason to believe these forces tard business for some time to come, leaving the field open to unexpectedin events to lift the market from the rut which lt has been running for nearly two months. Next month, however, there will be available a much clearer conception of probable crop reeults, and there are enoouragtng indications of more satisfactory yields than government reports to date have foreshadowed. In today cotton market, for Instance, a reaction occurred because of conditions figures presented by the National dinners association, which forecast the yield of 11.440,000 bales exclusive of linters. This was considerably more optimistic than the trade had expected, and it remains to be seen whether the forthcoming government surveys of the grain outlook wth not show a decided improvement during he current month. The weekly statement of the Bank of England and the Bank of Franc were interesting in some points. The British hank reported a pain In gold of no more than about 1530,000, being the flret time In four weeks that a really large addition to bullion holding had not ban reported. Slrlie May 27. however, the bank has and lt I gained more than upon this showing partly that expectation of fresh gold imports have been voiced of late. The Hank of France reduced its note circulation by 298,600.000 franc, carrying the outstanding circulation down to the lowest figure since October o( last year. It looks as though France ha been able to increase tax receipt to reduce its debt which would find reflection In the retirement of circulation by the bank. Sterling rate at Paris have been falling this week, reflecting a stronger position of the franc as a result, apparently, of the liquidation of a substantial tasue of French treasury billlocalIn London. markat the foreign exOn the changes were heavy ddrlng the greater a fair recovery near of with the day part the close.
