In your last letter you asked me to describe what its like here at the bone camp. Ill try, but Ive decided to also recommend a very special book that will explain it much better than I can its called The Dinosaurs of Utah (Frank DeCourten, University of Utah Press), and youll have a hard time putting it down. A lot of our general knowledge, of dinosaurs has come from the analysis of Utah fossil specimens, and the author has played a major role in that research. As youll see, its a beautiful book, with lots of truly stunning drawings and photos. Anyway, the days here are long and hot and its hard to explain the interest in chipping rock from petrified dinosaur bone, but I enjoy being mentary layers speak silently of an incomprehensible long-ag- o time, Deep Time, the geologists call it. DeCourten illustrates the incredible diversity of knowledge a paleontologist must have, as he masterfully explains each component and layer of the ancient mysteries of dinosaur time the geology, the ecosystems, the biota, and the many stories told by old bones and fossilized tracks. The next time you see a pheasant run across a field... or marvel at the speed of a roadrunner along the edge of a desert highway, you might think of them as latter-da- y dinosaurs. In a very real sense, thats probably just what they are. (p. 42) Just last week my colleague and his team finally an uncovered ren- full-tim- Alternative for good paleontology, I sus- pect. The bone camp is high above a vast expanse of desert, and the clouds can be seen miles and miles in the far distance, billowing into afternoon rainstorms far above deep canyons. Often, way out in that sea of desert I hear the wild japping of coyotes. As I work, I look out at the sweeping clouds and try to imagine this vast high desert as a beautiful steamy swamp, sheltered by leafy palm trees weve found opalized palm wood here, a beautiful creamy yellow. The book, as youll find, has a superb description of what life here was like then, way back in the Mesozoic Era (65 to 245 million years ago). One cant really imagine the variety and number of fossils in this region, for Mesozoic strata (Cretaceous, Jurassic, Triassic) cover over 25,000 square miles of Utah. This desert was once home to immense thunder lizards whose bones were now sorting out from the ancient alluvium. What magnificent creatures of skin and bone! And were finding evidence that they may have been just like us. There are presently many pieces of evidence that suggest that at least some dinosaurs had metabolic rates comparable to birds and mammals and were probably just as efficient in locomotion, feeding, and reproduction as are any of the higher vertebrates.
