Blanding Centennial Celebration The rivers of Southeast Asia big gets Humanities grant infusion The Blanding Centennial Celebration will be a little bit bigger and better this year, thanks to the Utah Humanities Council. Blue- Mountain - Shadows was successful in securing a grant of $1,500 to help fund four different programs they will do this year. The first project was the creation of a Centennial Slide show that was shown for the first time at the Winter Story Telling Festival Jan. 28. It took over 130 hours to create, and includes 95 slides and nearly 300 photographs. It will be shown again March 4 at the Centennial Swing, for the 4th of July, and at other events this year. The Centennial Swing in March is a day to commemorate Blandings dancing roots. Craig Miller, state folk arts specialist, will give an historic lecture at 3 p.m. in the Hall Below of the South Chapel, followed by a discussion on early pioneer dances. At 7 p.m. families are invited to the high school gym to learn some of the early dances, such as the Danish Slide Off and Virginia Reel. Two floor shows and the big band sounds of the Francis Lyman band will begin the final activity of the evening at 8:30 for the big community dance. A quilting slide show commemorating 100 years of quilters, will be the July event. Photographs of quilters not included in issue No. 18 of Blue Mountain Shadows are needed by March 30 along with a paragraph about the quilters history. Submit these to Kathy Hurst or Janet Wilcox. In October 2005, historian Bob McPherson and archaeologist Winston Hurst will discuss the history of early generations of Blanding residents who were Native Americans.
