Knight Intermediate School library. The meeting is open to anyone who is interested in helping with the concept, especially those who influence or enforce our transportation system and its laws. Safe Routes to School (SR2S) began in Marin, California. Schools there faced daily gridlock as parents lined and SUVs to up in mini-van- s school. The off at kids drop was these that parents, irony who were trying to keep their kids safe, had become the danger they were trying to avoid. The family car is the least safe way to get around, slightly behind walking and biking, and way behind riding the bus. At the same time, sedentary lifestyles leading to childhood obesity became such a big issue that the Centers for Disease Control issued urgent warnings about the problem. Kids who survived all that traffic were facing a different risk: a lifetime of health problems that are easily preventable by exercise. the Marin parents started SR2S. They held promotional campaigns, added traffic safety to school curricula starting much earlier than drivers ed, and they shepherded kids to school in groups, as bicycle trains and walking busses, physically showing kids the alternatives to motorized transportation. They did all of this within a larger community framework, enlisting public works and law enforcement officials to help integrate kids safely back into the mix. As a result, congestion around schools decreased dramatically. This eliminated real and perceived dangers, giving parents the peace of mind to allow their children to walk or ride to school. Now students in those communities enjoy healthy, social trips to and from school instead of witnessing their parents anxiety and road rage. Since this initial effort in the 90s, SR2S has grown internationally. There are programs in cities across this country, as well as in Europe and Australia. The National Highway Transportation Administration Safety (NHTSA) has created an toolkit outlining the 80-pa- programs nance. set-u- p news and views d Rio driver, assuming that means today than there was when Genghis Kahn was pillaging his way across Mongolia. In fact, if you want a statistic which reflects how technology has affected our safety and consider this: in recent years theres been a dramatic surge in the number of kids run over by their parents. Those giant vehicles drives in the name of safety are difficult to maneuver, especially in small spaces like driveways, and they have lousy visibility. Thats led to more accidental deaths as harried parents shuttle their kids to and fro. So maybe you should fear for your children. You should be afraid that theyll be trapped in SUVs, growing less active, until the day comes when, unaccustomed to moving under his or her own power, one of them dawdles too long in the shadow of your tailgate as you rush out the driveway to shuttle another child to some appointment or well-bein- hell grant g, activity. I watch as a car slows on approach, eventually stopping, without a turn signal. At that point I realize the driver is probably trying to allow me into traffic. Quite often theyre gesturing wildly, pantomiming the performance theyre hoping to inspire: that is, me riding in front of their bumper. What most dont realize is that it can be difficult to see into a car. Looking through the glare on the windshield, I can tell the driver is waving, but I dont know if hes trying to shoo a bee out the window or maybe hes just dropped a cigarette in his lap. Sure, I can assume the driver is signaling me to cross, but Ive learned its stupid to assume anything about a drivers motivations or intentions. The students are affiliated with the Future Farmers of America and are enrolled in agriculture and animal science classes at cy 3, I know you right-of-wa- only to be cut off anyway. I think some drivers figure that if Ive made eye contact, Ive seen them, and Ill get the hell out of the way. Usually, the driver stopping to be nice is just a harmless annoyance. These drivers mean well, but they dont seem to understand that by the time they slow down, stop, and wait, theyve taken more time out of my day, and theirs, than if theyd just sped past. However, sometimes its actually dangerous. No one car can control the entire flow of traffic, and a rider who darts into the road based on one drivers good will is at the mercy of the rest of the driving population. Assuming its safe to cross because one driver says so is, well, yet another potentially stupid assumption. Most adult cyclists can clear an intersection nearly as fast on a bicycle as in a car. We dont need help with that. In fact, we tend to be proud of our and energy independence; we ride specifically because we dont need much help. If you want to show your support for those goals, you can do that by what you dont do: dont crowd us, dont cut us off, and dont hit us.
