He was owneroperator of In & Out Testing, 4195 S. 500 W., Murray. Chris was bom March 18, 1969 in Wharton, Texas, to Chris W. and Patricia Luchak Sterry. His elementary education was in Bay City, Tex.; with fifth grade through graduation (1987) in Moab, Utah, and included courses at Utah State and Salt Lake Community College. Jobs included life guard, children's swim into service manstructor, ager in the auto salesrepair business in Utah, Arizona, and California. Chris worked at In & Out doing inspection and emissions several years before he and Sonja became owners of the business. Sonja Merritt became Chris wife in one of Chris favorite places. They were the first to be married on top of Lions Back in Moab, on August 23, 1997. Their son, Thomas James was bom Sept. 5, 2000. Their home is at 5447 S. Memorial Hospital, and as dinner music at Pack Creek Ranch. She is survived by a sister, Elaine Peterson, Moab, and two brothers, Arthur W. Skewes, Pampa, Tex., and J. B. Jack Skewes, Bountiful, Ut., and numerous nephews and nieces. A cousin, Sam Taylor, Moab, also survives. A sister, Madge Duncan, preceded her in death. Services were at Moab Memorial Mortuary Chapel, and interment was in Grand Valley Cemetery. She was bom in Moab on Sept. 20, 1920, the fifth child and third daughter of John B. and Lydia Taylor Skewes. She graduated from Grand County High School with honors and from the University of Utah with a B.S. in music and elementary education. She taught in Salt Lake City's Granite School District for 34 years, 21 of them a the William Penn School. In 1967 she was nominated for "Teacher of the Year." The nomination letter stated that she worked with children with emotional or behavioral problems, and was able to get work our of these special children when no one else could. Over her career she taught third through sixth grades retiring in 1980. After her mother, Lydia, died she moved back to the family home in Moab, where she filled her time with music, gardening and friends. An accomplished pianist, she frequently played for the extended care patients at Allen Thursday, September 16, 2004 Growing up in Moabf Howie attended Southeast Elementary, Grand County Junior High, and graduated from Grand County High Class of 1980. Howie worked locally for Jimmy Richardson at the Conoco, Shug Bailey at Cus- tom Craft, and for painter Roy Molina while in High School. to make you laugh. There was always a smile on his face, especially when he talked about his son, Sonja, or Moab. He lived life to the fullest and was always there to lend a hand or a shoulder. Chris is survived by his wife Sonja, son Thomas, Taylorsville; parents Chris and Trish Sterry, Bay City, TX; sister Debra Mondale, her husband Charlie, and children James and Cora, Lakeland, FL; and many extended relatives and great friends. A celebration of Chris life was held in Taylorsville, UT, Sept. 10. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to a trust fund established for his son, Thomas James Sterry at any Zions Bank. The family is asking any and all who knew Chris to write recollections of their time with him. These will form a book to help Thomas grow up knowing his dad. Howie traveled all over the world with the Navy. In 1985 Howie received an honorable discharge at the end of his1 enlistment. Howie joined his family in Elko Nevada to look for work; www.moabtimes.com he was hired by Freeport Gold. In 1987 Howie met Susan Belknap and they where married December 17, 1988. In 1991 Howie and Susan moved their family to Salt Lake City, Utah. Howie worked for Dick Simon Trucking, driving crosscountry until 1993. At that time he was hired by Barrick-Mercu- r Mining. Be later transferred to Barrick Gold and moved his family back to Elko. Howie started working in the lab and later trans- ferred to the pit driving Haul-Pa- k trucks where he worked until the onset of his illness. Howie enjoyed hunting, fishing, riding his Harley, woodworking, stained-glascamping and traveling. Howie was preceded in death by his mother Juanita Shields, his paternal grandparents D. H. and Lena Shields, his maternal grand parents Lawrence Evan and Thelma Jolley, and his aunts s, Lynda Whiting, and Joan Stringer. Howie was survived by his wife Susan Shields of Elko, children and Shawn Krajewski of Reno Nevada, and Cheri Krajewski of Chandler, Ariz., his father Darvin H. Shields of Moab, sisters, Laura Leader of Elko, Nev., Leisa Morris of Wendover, Nev. and Barbara Shields (Johnnie Montano), of Elko, Nev., five nieces and five nephews. He will be dearly missed by all. Services were held Tuesday, September 14, 2004 in Elko at the LDS Church. A viewing and graveside service will be held in Moab, Utah. Viewing will be at Moab Memorial Mortuary on Thursday, September 16, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and graveside service at 1 p.m. at Sunset Memorial Gardens.
