Since the initial detections in Grand, Washington, and box Elder Counties the last week of July, additional mosquito pools from Washington County, mosquito pools and sentinel chickens from Duchesne County, human cases from Davis, Salt Lake, and Utah counties, and a magpie from Grand County have been positive. The magpie was collected in Moab on July 30, and the Utah State Health Lab reported it positive August 11. Other birds from Moab have been tested and found nega tive. , The Mosquito District has been closely watching mosquito populations by setting carbon dioxide baited traps in places mosquitoes are likely to be abundant and testing the captured vector mosquitoes for virus every week. Eight traps are set around the valley each Monday night and the mosquitoes collected are sent up for testing on Tuesday. Other trappings are made through the week. Spraying would start just after sun- set when vector mosquitoes are most active and would be limited to only those areas where mosquito vectors are documented, by trap counts, to be in significant numbers. The most likely areas would be in Westwood Palisade subdivision and North Riversands Road. The best protection is to avoid mosquito bites at night. Be sure window and door screens are in good repair, sleep out only in a tent or other screened enclosure, and use long sleeves and repellant wherever mosquitoes are present at night. Property owners need to watch their water. Early in the month, someone drove over and damaged an irrigation ditch in the south part of town and flooded about a third of an acre of normally dry ground. It produced a lot of pest mosquitoes, but we treated it before vector mos: quitoes came off. If we hadnt found it, it could have made a serious situation for West Nile transmission, said Phillips. The district has also found vector mosquitoes in neglected wading pools and yard ponds spire school spirit. The girls have been bringing popsicles to the boys after a hard practice, and have offered relief to the girls sports teams as well. Plans are underway to make posters to recognize all of the schools athletes, regardless of gender or sport. We want to build good will and team spirit, Holyoak said. It will take some work, but it will be worth it.
