Q: 1 have a Barbie collection of about 100 dolls that I want to sell. How do I find a buyer ? - Derek, Ann Arbor, Mich, area A: There are several ways to sell, but one factor is the overriding determinant of their desirability. Davidson, of Marl & B (guess who?) in Bradenton, Fla., has bought and sold modern and vintage Barbies for some 17 years. Along with California dealer Joe Blitman, she hosts the popular Joe and Marl Barbie and fashion doll shows. If the readers dolls are in the new category, Davidson suggests selling on eBay. That way, you reach a motivated market. Vintage is another ballgame. Here all sorts of variables affect value. Condition is vital. They must have all their fingers and toes, counseled Davidson. Following the vocabulary particular to Barbie collectors, value is affected if the dolls are SLD (straight-le- g dolls) or BLD (bent-le- g dolls). They must have no lip rub or eye rub (intact lipstick and eyebrows). They must be free of the dreaded green ear, or oxidation from original pearl earring wires. The more unplayed with, the more value, she continued. That includes the original box, plus all the original clothing accessories. Once they are out of the box, value drops 50 percent. Played-wit- h dolls are less than half of that. If the doll is already down 75 percent and there is - horrors! - lip rub or another flaw, you can figure what a dealer will pay. Mint dolls are premium, because most original Barbies were loved and played with. Smart collectors know that makes pristine dolls rare and more valuable. The payoff on vintage Barbies can be great. If the readers dolls fit the desirable demographics, he has something any dealer or reseller will want. The option is whether to sell off the lot, or sell piecemeal. Once the seller knows what he has, the choice will be clearer. To determine age on the dolls, check a Barbie reference in the library or look for similar listings on eBay. If they are old and prime, con- sider selling through a good doll auction or specialty dealer. Theres only one chance to sell, so do it right! FYI: Marl&B is at www.marlbe.com. Q: My aunt, the original owner of this lamp, said never get rid of it. I need help quick! The current owners husband, is ready to throw it an away. - Judy, Cypress, Calif. A: Stop that man immediately, Judy! Hogtie or hobble him whatever it takes but do not let him pitch that lamp. The sculptural table lamp, with hanging bunches of glass grape shades on arcing stems, appears to be a prime 1900s piece of late 1800s-earl- y Art Nouveau. One can never tell definitively from a photo (it could be a good repro), but 3-- 8, in-la- - - the well-ca- st central sculp- ture, the lines of the lamp, the molded shades and the glass inset in the base all point to quality. In a good auction, such a piece may bring well over $1,500. Let an auction specialist evaluate it for you. Tell that Your aunt was to your right on the money.
