The near n total of the Sloughs each of the last two years has caused a great increase in with reflooding the next spring. dry-dow- According to Moab Manager Bob Phillips, Ironically, the drought has caused the problem. In a normal water-year, only the margins of the pond have large numbers of larvae, but this year even r areas were the bad. In three months we have used about as much larvacide as we used all of last year. Though increpitus is probably the most aggressive pest mosquito in the valley, it is extremely unlikely to be a vector (disease transmitter) of encephalitis. It hatches from only a single brood relatively early in the year before it is warm enough for efficient disease transmission, and it feeds exclusively on mammals and, thus, is very unlikely to pick up West Nile, Saint Louis, or western equine encephalitis viruses, which are bird viruses. The Mosquito Districts current policy is to spray adult mosquitoes only when they pose a risk of disease transmission. The district uses baited traps to catch mosquitoes, and according to Phillips, The only common mosquito in the valley right now is increpitus. All others, including the known and suspect West Nile vectors, are still in low numbers, but we are watching this very closely. West Nile virus was found in the valley in a dead crow and a dead magpie last fall. So far this year, it has not been found anywhere in Utah, but a human case was confirmed in San Juan County, New Ochlerotatus increpitus (it has no common names except for those that cannot be printed in a newspaper of general circulation). Floodwater mosquitoes, like increpitus , lay eggs on mud flats left behind as flood deep-wate- SPANISH VALLEY VINEYARDS & WINERY For Locally Grown and Produced Wines! We intend on spraying West Nile vectors if and as soon as their numbers become significant. Surveillance for West Nile virus has begun. Two chicken flocks for detecting this and other diseases were established in the valley. Chickens are used because West Nile virus, like St. Louis encephalitis and Western Equine encephalitis, is a bird virus that must develop in bird populations before it can be transmitted to humans or other mammals. To detect these viruses, blood is drawn from the chickens every one or two weeks and sent off to a lab for testing. Other steps are being taken to detect West Nile virus. Mosquitoes are trapped and sent away for virus testing, and saliva samples from dead birds are collected and tested. For this, the public needs to report dead birds, es- pecially Corvids (crows, ravens, magpies, and jays), to 1 the Mosquito District at or to Animal Control at The bird should be no more than about 24 hours dead and should be covered with a box or something to protect it from scavengers. Of special concern is a bird that shows signs ofnervous system impairment such as by being uncoordinated or unable to 259-716- 259-893- 8. Tourism . . . Despite the endorsement of the Utah Travel Industry Coalition, many travel regions and businesses rejected the rate hikes for targeting their sector and their customers, with an uncertain payback. The second bill, S.B. 60, for instance, was focused heavily on sports and recreation facilities, the majority of which are on the Wasatch Front. Knight said in the MATC May meeting that with the coalitions membership and promotional efforts naturally weighted towards the bigger markets of northern Utah, Its almost impossible to get them to think beyond Provo, and thats just the way it is. We need to spread the bill for state promotion out - and not just to tourists. He went on to argue that with 80 percent of Utah revenue either a product or byproduct of tourism, the cost of promoting the industry should be shared by everyone, possibly through a general sales-ta- x increase. car-rent- al Atterding Utah State in Moab is an excellent and easy way to get your education. Baby birds and birds obviously killed by cars, predators, or gunshots are very unlikely to have the virus and should not be reported, and clusters of dead birds are generally caused by poisonings or contaminated feeders not by West Nile virus. It is important that people do not directly handle suspect dead birds because, if infected, the birds can have enough virus to transmit the disease. If you have to move a dead bird, use a shovel or, if you have to pick it up with your hands, use gloves or a plastic bag to avoid direct contact, said Phillips. Of the 17 species of mosquitoes in the valley, only two are likely to play an important role in virus transmission. The Western Encephalitis Mosquito ( Culex tarsalis) is a known vector and can be common in the valley. It breeds in stagnant water in shallow areas of the sloughs, pastures, flood ponds, flood-irrigate- unmaintained Stevens-Henage- Childbirth Education Classes presented by Allen Memorial Hospital Women due in June, July or August... Even though this mosquito will bite people and has a flight range of a mile or so, it feeds mostly on birds and only bites at night from evening dusk to sunrise, so most people will never see it. According to Phillips, the greatest risk is to people who go out after dark without long sleeves and repellent or who have houses that lack good Classes will be held on Tuesday evenings from 6:30-8:3- p.m. 0 Cost for 6 classes is $50, may be paid for by Medicaid. The only other mosquito likely to play an important role in West Nile virus transmission in the valley is the Western Marsh Mosquito ( Culex erythrothorax) which reproduces in the bulrush and cattail beds of the sloughs. It bites birds and mammals, and lab tests show it can transmit West Nile virus. It is a small reddish-yellomosquito that bites at night but generally can bite in shady cool areas during the day. Its flight range is so short (generally less than 100 yards) that its impact w would be only in, or immediately next to, the sloughs. Small fish are generally good at controlling mosquitoes in ponds, and normal maintenance of swimming pools will prevent mosquitoes from breeding. To avoid West Nile virus this year, it is especially important to remove potential breeding sites or, if this is not possible, to call Mosquito Abatement.
