Show gap o ffltw-ffnhzpnthn- Dear Adrien and Sam, Our (TI) news in recent weeks has brought out that there are still some live folks in Grand County who can get the hackles up on their backs resulting from the way things are run around here. As you have surmised, the foregoing statement reflects the issue on the late trash debacle. This is only representative of one of a number of areas oflackadaisical management creating dissension and loss of confidence by the voting residency of Grand County. Lets set the stage and review some of the underlying causes creating the distrust that is commencing to rear its ugly head. The Trash Act. There was no formalized bid proposal. How can there be competitive bidding for trash disposal and handling without a definitive proposal andor specification for all bidders to respond to on common ground. The spread of bidding prices and the afterthought concerning necessary bonding give rise to the lack of leadership homework for achieving competitive bidding and it all certainly impacts the thoroughness of the job that must be performed. And now that the pressure is on for election, our City Council members are looking for ways of voidcan this debacle ing the contract. Just how get? Planning. Where is it? One reads in the TI the concerns for low-cohousing and the interests for attracting light manufacturing to our area. And our decision-makin- g leadership is guilty of fostering the number one most offensive axiom of planning in existence by permitting variances of zoning classes to face one another from opposite sides of streets and roads. Afew examples are the rump end" of City Market out to the sidewalk across the street from what is now the Middle School in Moab. In turn, the school gets even by constructing a metal school bus bam and parking lot across from a group of quality homes. Then there is the golf course that Moab can certainly be proud of with someone somehow having accomplished a job well done. But along the course a condominium complex and across the street single residency homes on ample plots. The real prize, however, goes back a few years and now involves the location of the present Spanish Valley Water and Sewer District complex, wherein the owners of the homes and others residing in the area around it attempted via court action to halt its construction and zoning to no avail. How can one expect a community to grow in an L' f nt off-col- or st junk-lade- well-space- n d A positive, 'can do' attitude Dear Editor, I recently had what, in this day and age, is a rare and wonderful experience. I had a problem, and actually found people who took the problem seriously, were responsive, cheerful and extremely capable! I was in Grand Junction when my main business truck, developed probvehicle, a 1992 GMC one-to-n lems. I took it into the dealer in Grand Junction and they fixed the original problem, but the truck was still not running correctly. At this point, they said they had no idea what the problem was, and were unable to fix it even though I told them I was not able to conduct business without it. I returned to Castle Valley that night with the truck just barely limping home. The following day I took the truck into Moab, organized, respected and aesthetic manner if no real planning and zoning controls exist. Price and competency stand out and are recognized and judged by everyone. It is way past time for our decision-makeand planners to travel out of town to sectors of our country to see what is going on in successful community planning, and this doesnt mean take a trip up through the south valley to Salt Lake City. We talk of attracting manufacturing and there are always organizations that are growing and desirous of areas for their expansion. Prime factors will include moving a percentage of key personnel receiving some substantial salaries and their resulting outlooks for obtaining homes with protective covenants and restrictions to control what comes in next door. The likelihood of any old thing allowed next door doesnt enhance a prideful outlook and is a likely potential for losing those key personnel were their employer to consider such a move. Other vital concerns will hinge on tax structures, logistics, transportation, planned services, and other governing factors affluent to personal presentation of the organization planning a move. Take a look around. There is little evidence e to illustrate any controlled and planning, and our principal arterial streets and roads n of the city and valley are a tain ed mess. Spanish Valley of Grand County could without much doubt take the blue ribbon for unlicensed junkyards in western America. There is a lot more to community planning than housing springing up all over the landscape. Manufacturing operations looking to relocate are not stupid e and without planning or they wouldnt be looking to make a move. We had first better learn something about manufacturing and their desires to improve their own image through e growth and what it takes to achieve a partnership that will satisfy the needs of a growing industry to locate here. And herein lies some considerations for our own younger generations, which have little more to choose from for successful vocations than to leave Grand County. If what is said is really desired in the manner of attracting clean industry, a stable retired citizenry and quality service elements, then our planning, zoning and decisionmaking bodies better get to some planning and control strategies that will attract those that have an objectivity for pride, aesthetics, economically efficient and living. Moab e pulled into Mike Young Chevrolet at about 11:50 a.m., and explained my problem to the service team of Reggie, Danny, and Tim. Not only did they immediately address problem, they worked through lunch to do it! As it turned out, the diagnostics machine was in error and showed everything working correctly. They were forced to manually test everything until they were able to diagnose and fix the problem. All through this and frustrating procedure, they remained courteous and cheerful. Many thanks to Reggie, Danny, and Tim for their positive Can Do attitude, as well as their excellent technical skills! Denise Lucas, Rainbows End, Inc.
