Information that is developed on the national small business community is often misinterpreted. Take for example the often quoted statement: 80 percent of all small businesses fail within the first 10 years of operation. How often have you heard this regarding the dire starting a small business? Research shows that this statement is not only incorrect, but that the exact opposite it true. 80 The origin of the from came rate failure percent data of 10-yea- r, 259-444- 1 Movies Effective Friday All shows before 6 p.m. $4 il. mini n Mat n & 1 1 3:130 in published by Dun the Business Failure Record. The annually published report contains information that cuses on business failures by age. The Dun and Bradstreet data does not compare age of business failure against the total population ofAmerican small business. Hence it does not forecast the rate of business failure. It simply shows, for those businesses that do fail, at what age they are most Ukjely to go under. The annual small business failure rate can be extrapolated from other national data. However, in order to understand business failure rate, some basic definitions must be clarified first. For example, what is meant by business failure? From 1981 to 1993, the number of business filings with the IRS in the United States went from 13.6 million to more than 21.4 million. That represents and average tax filing increase of 3.9 percent a year. In 1993 (the most current year with complete data available), 66,428 businesses nationwide were reported in the Statistical Abstract of the United States as having filed for bankruptcy. This number becomes the numerator for establishing the national business failure rate. Comparing the total number of business tax filings with the total number of business bankruptcies (losses to creditors) for the same period of time estimates the national business failure rate. In 1993 there were business in 21,499,000 the United States. The resulting business failure rate against the total population of businesses is less than .5 percent per annum. San Juans big plays, coupled with tremendous speed, proved to be the deciding factors in the game. Defensively, the Devils gave an up unheard-o- f 44 points, 34 of which came off big plays. San Juan got three big scores in the first quarter, and every time the Devils were able to grind their way back into the game San Juan countered with a quick score, maintaining their sizable lead. Offensively, the Devils did everything they could to win, beating San Juan in every key stat, but the Devils ultimately lacked the speed and big plays to keep pace with the Broncos.
