The creek's north fork drains Gold Basin and the surrounding peaks. Sand Flats Road is more or less the north boundary of the whole watershed, and the Moab valley's west rim is the western boundary. The watershed his a long history of occupation. Several basket maker and Pueblo pit houses have been found in Moab, and several long-tercampsites were recently unearthed in the new high school's athletic field. Both forks of Mill Creek Canyon have rock art dating from about 4000 BC to 1700 AD. The mountains were used seasonally by these early inhabitants. The Utes hunted game in the La Sals and are believed to have used fire as a tool for driving game. Fire was also a tool used to enhance the seed crops and attract game, as lush vegetation grew in after fires. The first European settlement Elk in the area was the short-live-d Mountain Mission. Although the Utes drove the first Mormon settlers out of the Moab valley, it was only 24 years until the area was 7-- 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Every day Moab residents drive over, walk along or simply live next to Mill Creek. The creek's large trees and running water are important Moab features. Mill Creek's watershed feeds water to Moab and Spanish Valley, occa- m k sionally overflowing. The rainstorms of Sept. 5 and 6 were a reminder of Mill Creek's ability to flood. Mill Creek's watershed enback-to-bac- compasses approximately 75 square miles of Bureau of Land Management land. Water from Mill Creek continued to be important as Moab grew. In the 1960s and 1970s, Moab buzzed with discussion of building a dam on Mill Creek, but feasibility studies showed that the site was geologically unsuitable, and the costs would be too high. Instead of damming the creek, water from the upper reaches of the creek was diverted into Ken's Lake. The lake provides irrigation water for agriculture in the valley and has become a popular fishing, sailing , swimming and camping spot. What does the Mill Creek watershed mean for Moab and Grand County now? Ken's Lake and diversions from Mill Creek water many areas of the valley. Diversions from the creek in the Manti-L- a Sal National Forest allow farming on Wilson and South Mesas. The creek still provides water for agriculture, although houses are quickly replacing open fields.
