Instead, there is a clattering of dishes and pans in the kitchen, the echoing of voices around the house, family conversation around the breakfast table and a last minute scramble for those leaving home for the days activities. No news, no sports, no videos, no Sesame Street, no Masterpiece Theatre and no predictable prepackaged entertainment. For one week, TV is replaced with the real thing LIFE. Week National begins today, so take out a board game, shuffle a deck of cards, make some clay dough and get out the rolling pins and cookie cutters. Plan a picnic or a hike and take along your camera. Fill your bike tires with air. Dig out your mitts and balls. Teach your kids how to knit, crochet, embroider, or weave pot holders on those red metal looms. Plan a party and let the kids make taffy or pizza and play games. Gather up your fishing poles, grab your tennis rackets, shoot some hoops or put together a kite. Dont forget books! Visit the library. Fill the house with books, the Dragonlance Chronicles, The Hardy Boys, Nancy Drew mysteries, The Black Stallion, books too thrilling to put down. Get a star TV-Turno-ff show your children map constellations. Hold your children on your laps and read them a story. Pull out some old albums and reminisce, or organize the piles of pictures you have. Show your family theyre important. Let your children help you fix supper or let them talk to you while youre fixing supper. Help them wash the car, care for their own clothes and open a savings account. Have a family meeting. Correlate and plan activities. Listen with your heart and share feelings. Tackle that honey-d- o job or just, be there when youre needed. Go for a walk, hike a trail, or sit and enjoy a sunset. Soak in the beauty around you. Saunter around the wetlands or the museum. Drag the family off to a concert or a play. Give a room a new look. Clean out the clutter. Slap on some paint. La Sal equestrian now involved in national quarterhorse assn. Jennifer Garcia of La Sal, recently enrolled In the American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA) Horseback Riding Pro- gram. The program provides association members recognition for time spent riding or driving American Quarter Horses. A unique aspect of the program is its simplicity. Current members complete a program e application and pay a $25 enrollment fee. Each receives an official log sheet to record their hours drivone-tim- en-roll- ee ing or riding their American Quarter Horse. THE TRUMPET by Pastor David Halcomb Participants need not own their own horse, but all official hours must be accrued with a registered American Quarter Horse. The first award, a program recognition patch, is given after only 50 hours have been logged and verified. Patches and nine subsequent awards are presented at 100 to 5,000 hour levels and range from merchandise gift certificates from Drysdales Western Store to a Montana Silversmith trophy belt buckle at the highest level. The first game was another defensive one for our girls, with two goals scored by Cortez in each half. Christina Pasler made a terrific save in the first half, deflecting the ball from the goal after it had slipped by our goalie. In the second half sophomore Courtney Rappe made a great save, driving the ball way up the field. The game was played at a more relaxed pace, allowing both teams to implement their passing strategies, and generally enjoy the game.
