Show HZItopfe February 17, 2000 right 'or not Choices by Tech. Sgt. Duane Martin AADD President Each second of each day we are allowed to make a choice. Each choice carries with it a consequence or series of con- sequences. Sometimes we make the right choice and sometimes not the consequences tell us which weve picked. Do you know what the consequences are for being caught driving under the influence or driving while intoxicated? Id like to use my friend Joe as an example. Joe is a sharp guy who has the world in the palm of his hand. Hes intelligent and wants to lead men and f women of integrity. Hes an impact player with vision and often dreams of riches and fame. Joes philosophy is No one ever achieved more than their dreams. One day Joe went out with a friend for lunch. Joe decided the only logical beverage to mix with pizza was beer so they ordered a pitcher. One pitcher led to another and then a drive home. Joe got behind the wheel and made it a couple hundred yards down the road. He ran a red light and saw the blue lights flash in the rear view mirror. Now Joe is still a sharp guy, he just made a poor choice. Some of the consequences for his DUI include time in a nice warm room with bars on the windows, a $1,000 fine, and an insurance bill between $100 and $150 per month when he gets to drive again. Thats an expensive pitcher of beer isnt it? Joe made two poor decisions: the first was to drink without a prior plan on how to get home, the second was to drive drunk. Do you know someone who has been in a similar situation? Four months ago Airman Against Drinking and Driving was formed on Hill AFB. Our mission is to eliminate DUIDWIs involving Hill AFB members. AADD comes into play in those circumstances when a Hill AFB military member makes the first poor decision, but hopefully before the second one. carry consequences Since its inception AADD team members, including the Designated Driver Program Team, have helped more than 40 people. Potentially, that is 40 careers saved, 40 less accidents and 40 families kept intact. Members are currently working other projects including DUIDWI Accountability Signs at the South and West gates, Midnight Basketball Program, Late Night Video series, Sports Day, Dorm Open House, FTAC and Mass Briefings. AADD is in its infancy on Hill AFB, but this team has made and will con- tinue to make a positive impact. Team members know the important role they play in assisting the 75th Air Base Wing commander and 388th Fighter Wing commander ensure the safety of military personnel. While the base population can support contributions of 3,250 units per year (or more) , we only collected 847 units at 27 blood drives in 1999, an average of 31 units per drive. This number of donations is just adequate to support one organization. Splitting this between two organizations wouldnt be financially feasible for either Ogden Regional or the American Red Cross. While we hope to increase the numbers of actual donors over the next year, until this happens we need to restrict our blood pool to one organization. hilltop.pahill.af.mil.
