Ken Pierce, a Contracting Directorate employee, recently captured two gold medals while placing in all seven events he entered in the Huntsman World Senior Games Oct. "I mainly compete against myself, to see if I can improve from year to year," Pierce said. "I just want to see how well I can do in each event, see if I can reach a certain time." Amarathoner who ran in the 100th Boston Marathon, Pierce trains by running on base on weekends and after work and excels in the distance events. Games for a number of years and says that he ha? added an event or two each year, but recently he decided to add a field event, shot-pu"When I first started, I'd do one or two events and then I got so I wanted to try additional events,' Pierce said. "So I increased the number of events "What I found is that training for the marathon builds a base, an endurance level. Once you've done a marathon, you can do some of these lesser events with just some concentration on certain details," said Pierce, who described the hilly course as challenging. "I'm not really fast, but I have fairly good endurance. I can run fast for a long period of time, so distance events are the optimum events for me. It was pretty close competition, within a few seconds." Pierce says he has just one racing strategy "run hard all the way." It helped him also take home two runs. and 3,200-metsilver medals in the Pierce has been competing in the World Senior 400-met- er er each year. I threw the shot and placed 5th or 6th,...- so I thought I'd get a shot and practice to see if :ould do better. This year I was able to place. And place he did, taldng home a bronze medal, his third of the competition. Pierce also took home and the the bronze in the 1,500-mettrack events. Pierce, who was part of the first graduating class at Bonneville High School in Washington Terrace, says he ran the 800 meters in high school but was never a serious athlete. He went on to get his business management degree from Weber State College and his Masters of Business Manage 800-met- er er ment from Utah State. Pierce is currently senior procurement analyst whose responsibilitie S include helping implement acquisition reform at the Ogden Air Logistics Center. "When I got older, I started competing in local races, just found that was fun. I just wanted to see if I could improve," Pierce said. This competition marked the 13th running of the World Senior Games, which began in 1987.
