Several seasons are currently underway right now including cottontail rabbit, grouse, chukkar partridge, and yes, pheasant season. Cottontail rabbit hunting should provide the best hunting this fall and winter, as our chukkar partridge and pheasant populations are on the decline due to weather and loss of habitat. d As far as the pheasant is concerned, habitat remains the biggest culprit. As urban areas continue to grow at a phenomenal rate, our agricultural and rural areas continue to decline. As a result, Utah CALL TODAY! Cindy K. Snyder at Married.... In the second of three statements regarding his agenda for his first 100 days in office, Leavitt said state government needs a periodic dose of private sector reality. The decline was measured by a Crime Index of selected offenses for which law enforcement agencies nationwide provide data to the FBI's Uniform Crime Reporting Program. The Index has not shown a decrease since 1984. (This does not replace the state and federal waterfowl stamps required of duck and goose hunters). Cost of the stamp is $5 and revenue will be used for the development and improvement of habitat on public and private land, purchase of habitat, transplants, access to private land, predator control and education. Most monies will be used for improvement of Utah's pheasant populations, and for those of you who apparently had a bit of difficulty differentiating between a hen and rooster opening weekend, the rooster is the one with the color (and the only one that is legal)! Mistaking a hen for a rooster pheasant is inexcusable, so be careful and sure of your target. Nothing will compound the loss of pheasant numbers any quicker than the unnecessary removal of hens. Again, know your target! Lastly, written permission is required to hunt on any private land, and landowners are the key to future hunting opportunities. Let's show them a little courtesy and good sportsmanship. The 1992 deer season will be remembered for it's large crowds and lower than expected hunter success. Hunting conditions were difficult at best and I'll take a wild guess at harvest success to be in the neighborhood of Hopefully, the new n concept set to begin in 1993 will spread the Bring a can or staple for Thanksgiving Basket and receive an extra $1000 play money for prizes.
