They also refused to approve the continued taxing power of the Allen Memorial Hospital District, and voted to elect a Democrat to fill what now appears to be a very short term on the County Commission. Voters passed the citizens' initiative to change the form of government by a 1,822-1,48- 2 margin, or 55 to 45 percent. County delays action on landfill district, purchase of land By Ken Davey Grand County Commissioners will talk to Moab City about delaying action on setting up a district to manage the local landfill until a recycling option can be included. That was some of the discussion at a short County Commission meeting held Monday. The day be- fore the election. Earlier this fall, the Commission prepared an initial resolution in support of such a district, and called a public hearing, where support for the district was strong. But participants The Commissioners said the road, along with helping Clark with future subdivision development, would provide needed alternative access to the hospital. But Commissioner Sam Cunningham said she had talked with emergency management personnel and was told they were not necessarily in favor of the road. She added that she was told that the new road would provide no better access to the hospital than the existing River. The change of government referendum became a major controversial issue since a petition campaign in the spring qualified it for the ballot. The Fourposter is particularly interesting because the two actors must portray the same married couple at many different stages of life. Each successive scene of the play occurs at a later date in the marriage than the scene before it, beginning on the couple's wedding night and culminating on the day that the two move from the home they have lived in for many years. Nine of 11 voting districts turned down the referendum, with only voters at Arches National Park and Castle Valley approving the measure. The vote means that responsibility for the hospital now reverts back to the County itself, as the hospital district has lost the power to impose property tax. Democrat Peter Haney was elected to fill the County Commission seat currently held by Sam Cunningham. Haney received 1,613 votes, while Republican Rick Hover garnered 1,050, and Cunningham, running as an independent, received 633. Two new members of the School Board were chosen. Rick York won in district two, beating Glenna Oliver by a 259-2- 1 1 margin. Democrat Jan Graham was the Grand County winner in the race for State Attorney General, with a 4 victory over Scott 1,796-1,41- 0 1,755-1,31- Bums. And Democrat Bill Benge easily defeated write-i- n candidate for County Attorney Sandra Starley by a 2,276-51- 2 margin. In the race for State Senate, Republican David Adams outdis- tanced Mike Dmitrich, 6, 1,745-1,50- though Dmitrich received enough support in Carbon County to win the race.
