Following a public hearing called for the purpose, the Commission passed an ordinance suspending the enforcement of County Ordinance 146 relative to opening hours of bars and taverns. The new ordinance provides that for this year only, bars will be allowed to remain open from 10 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 31, until 2 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 1, 1990, since New Years Eve falls on Sunday this year. Although there was some discussion from those in attendance, there Commission indicated that rather than accept any of the bids at that time, they would be referred to Road Supervisor Tim Pogue to see that the equipment meets all specifica- - to broadcast Newport Jazz Festival KUED-KUE- R Once again, audiences have a front row seat reserved at the world-renowe- d JVC Newport Jazz Festival from Narragansett Bay. The excitement and spontaneous vitality of live jazz performances are captured on the sixth annual special, "Newport Jazz 89." KUER FM-9- 0 and KUED Channel 7 will simulcast the program which will air December 28, at 8 p.m. "Newport Jazz 89 continues the tradition of bringing together a broad range of artists who prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that jazz is America's most classic-a- s well as its most adventurous-ar- t form. Performing this year are Herbie Mann, Wynton Marsalis, George Shearing, Mel Torme, The Newport All Stars, Dianne Reeves and Spyro said that "if a man can play jazz, he can play jazz on the flute." As he launches into the upbeat "Memphis Underground" Mann proves once again that his flute is an urgent, imaginative and singular jazz strument. Following "Superman" is the bright new superstar of jazz, trumpeter Wynton Marsalis. His elegant rendition "Chasin the Bird" makes it clear why classical trumpeter Maurice Andre was moved to cal! Marsalis "potentially the greatest trumpeter of all time." Next on the "Newport Jazz '89' line up is one of the most distinguished senior citizens of jazz, the incomparable George Shearing. His smooth keyboard wizardry prompted the "New Yorker" to hail his "masterly touch," which is rendered in "All or Nothing at All" and his signature piece, "Lullaby of Bird land." Shearing then introduces his frequent collaborator, the inimitable Mel Torme. The years have not diminished Torme's extraordinary vocal ability. The audience revels in his versions of "Barclay Squtue" and "Pick Yourself Up." One cntic remarked that Torme "opens a song like a flower." Festival founder and jazz pianist George Wein is up next with his Newport All Stars. Their rendition of "Them There Eyes" marks their first appearance at the festival. Gyra. The music has never been better. Dynamic new vocalist Dianne Reeves opens the show with "How High the Moon." ANNUAL DINNER HELD The Miller reunion was held again this year at the home of Hal and Betty Johnson. There were 56 attending the Thanksgiving dinner.
