Show A2-T- he Times-Independe- Thursday, "Nov. 30, 1989 Community Comments I 3 By Sam Taylor Talks are continuing this week about the development of a visitor center and central city park on the comer of Main and major Center Streets in Moab. Im holding my breath. I believe the idea is great. My concern that it might not come to pass is based on the fear that too many entities might find it impossible to come up agencies and quasi-publwith a working solution on who owns what, who leases what, what is allowed in the visitor center, etc. It's kind of like the story of the camel. Actually, the beast is really a horse designed by a committee. The ability of those involved is going to be challenged if the feat is accomplished. But it's too good an idea to let slip away. Already, some criticism has arisen relative to the loss of property tax revenue if the land and improvements in question are taken off the public tax rolls. The trade-off- s there look good to me. In the first place, the property isn't generating much property tax revenue in the first place. And sales tax revenue that might be generated in the visitor center, and in increased business in the downtown area should easily offset any loss in property tax. The face of the community is changing, and it should. Things will never be the same as they were in the 50s, 60s and 70s. Those of us with a stake in the future of this community have to be willing to "go with the flow." Hang in there, folks. The only people not criticized to some those who dont do anything. Youve got a splendid idea. are degree Personalities, turf battles, criticism, etc., should be handled as diplomatically as possible. Your plan is too good to let slip away. ic sjt Sure, I've started my Christmas shopping this year. And for a change. Im not going to tell Adrien what I got her for Christmas. Maybe it will just be a lump of coal and some sticks (that's what my son Jed always tells me hes getting me). After all, the big gift I so proudly bought for her last year is still in the carton. Great idea that was. My proudest gift of all over the years was a food processor I got for my wife. Its never yet processed any of the Taylor food, but it sure looks good on the fireplace hearth. Eat your heart out, Brent. sjt This has truly been a two weeks of Thanksgiving. Despite the loss of a beloved sister the second one in the space of a year we've been thankful for the family gathering, not only in California with members of our extended family, but also for the warm family table last Thursday. gathering of our own around the turkey-lade- n But mostly. I'm thankful that I live among so many caring friends who have been so sincere in their words and notes of sympathy. Yesterday topped it off. I received a phone call from a political acquaintance in Ogden a big shaker and mover who obviously knows when some sparrows fall. After some words of condolence, I finally asked the usual question: "What can I do for you today." His answer: "Do for me? Nothing. I've never lost a sister before and I might soon. I just wanted you to know I was thinking about you after your loss. Thanks, Alex. I needed that. Renders share views Dear Sam, I want to convey in the strongest terms Moab Community Theaters thanks for the community's attendance and support of "The Foreigner," recently in Star Hall. It was a successful and enriching experience for all involved. Special thanks to the University of Utah, Joel the "Rain Main," Massey, Community Chorus all the unsung ticket takers-a- nd to all those who came from hundreds of miles away to see the production. Most of all, thanks to the cast and crew for their talent, and to Moab for making it happen! Thankfully, Christine Robbins Director, "Hie Foreigner" Dear Sam, I've never hesitated in blowing the whistle on Merv and Feme when I've felt something was amiss and I want to be equally quick in drawing attention to what they've done this time. We recently completed the County budget and Merv and Feme did an outstanding job in bringing in a reasonable budget that addresses the needs of the entire county to the extent of our capabilities to fund those needs, and to top it off, it's a balanced budget I was very impressed with their capable and competent handling of sensitive budget matters and commend them for a job well done. David Knutson Grand County Commissioner Dear Sam, I was stunned by the announcement that another park was on the drawing board. Do we need one more? I say no for several reasons: First, we have four parks already in place. Perhaps we do need some signs on Main Street to direct our tourist friends to these fine facilities. Second, the project sounds expensive. Common sense tells me that the removal of storage tanks and concrete coupled with the price of the property and construction costs would add up to a tidy sum. Even if a grant covered the initial cost, maintenance and repair expenditures would be forever. Third, let's not remove another r ings. These improvements would be a plus for the local folks who are often forgotten while we cater to the visitor. Thanks for letting me express my opinion. Times-Independe- Mrs. Dolphin P.S. I have always had the distinct impression tourists were drawn here to see our natural parks not the manmade ones. nt ) (UPS Entered as Second Class Matter at the Post Office at Moab, Utah under the act of March 3, 1897. Perhaps a lot of old timers are having the same thoughts. With me it's almost a personal matter because my husband, A. M. (Lon) Robertson your dad, L. L. (Bish) Taylor, chairman, and Ralph Miller, Sr., wer the commissioners that were responsible for the erection of the courthouse. They were the team that saw to the building of the road to Dead Horse Point, roads out to Elgin and Thompson, where the residents didn't want to give or sell the My husband went out to tell them the county would move their homes, replacing the plumbing, landscaping and fences. Thanks to Warren, one of the guides (?) on some of our rides. He has a great sense of humor, and was very knowledgeable about the area. Thanks, Warren, for showing me how to slow down and "see" the area. Although I passed through Zion, Bryce, and Capitol Reef National Parks, the Canyonlands and Arches area had a particular beauty all their own. Living in the Mojave Desert area of southern California, I can appreciate the rock, plantlife, and wildlife of the Moab area. It was a nice change to get away from the hectic pace of California, and all the unfriendly drivers and people. If some Moabites haven't had a chance to experience California, maybe they shouldn't! Everyone I met in Moab was friendly, outgoing, and it looked to me like no one had a care in the world. Some of that rubbed off on me. It's nice to slow down and "smell the roses," so to speak. Sometimes we need that. My best friend, John Adam, and I were in Moab for the Canyonlands Fat Tire Festival. Not once did we experience anyone acting belligerent toward any mountain bikers. You Moabites seemed to have a genuine interest in us. I'd like to thank a few people for making our trip so enjoyable.
