It will be sixty miles on horseback in two days. Come travel the old mail carriers trail first hand. What started as one man's effort to recreate his fathers history has turned into an annual adventure for horsemen and women. Ted Ekker, of Green River, Utah decided to deliver a Valentine to his mother and nephews in Hanksville in a unique way. He decided to retrace the path his father, Cornelius Ekker, used to deliver the mail from Hanksville to Green River from Ted followed the trail by horseback as his father did. After Ted's initial ride he later invited some local horsemen to make this unique journey with him. The trail ride has 1095-191- 5. increased each year as a popular way to enjoy history and the beauty of the incredible desert. The scenery is amazing. Beautiful buttes, mancos shale and blue adobe in differing hues of red and brown. The terrain is everchanging from sand washes to soft desert dunes, with slickrock trails. Evidence of the Old Mail Trail remains along the route. This is the country of Butch Cassidy and the Wild Bunch at Robbers Roost. Traveling southwest five miles the evidence of the U.S. Mail Run quickly appears on the desert floor. The fun begins now, as horses and rider must forge the San Rafael River. The ride is held in the early spring, so the river is still low. After crossing, you encounter wash after wash in this varied desert terrain. At last you arrive at Cottonwood Draw the campsite for the first day. It is the perfect spot for the evenings festivities plus an excellent water hole for the horses. (Fresh drinking water will be trucked in for the night.) Dinner is cooked with dutch oven potatoes provided. A road leads into the Draw so family and friends can meet for the evening's fun. Morning comes early and the riders set out again crossing through Cottonwood Draw. Indian petro-glypline the wall as you exit The desert quickly reappears with rock formations and buttes dotting the horizon. This second days ride is approximately thirty miles. Blackburn Draw is the last step of this authentic western adventure. Just ahead is the Hanksville Airport where family and vehicles are wait- ing. Tired and saddle sore may be the immediate memory, but the scenery, friendship and experience will remain long after. 1. The CYO consists of 9th through 12th graders and meetings are held after Mass on Sundays in the church hall. There will be several other fund raisers besides the dances in the near future.
