Ford warned that, with few exceptions, a man who fails to register before turning 26 will permanently forfeit his eligibility for certain federal benefits such as student aid, job training, and most federal employment, in addition to facing possible prosecution as a felon. Some states also require registration for state student aid, entrance to colleges and universities, state employment and permission to practice law. Many of the men who have not registered may be unaware of the requirement or do not understand the Over 21 million men have registered with Selective Service since registration was reinstituted in 1980. The cost of these programs is $270 each, except for the six day, March 1, program, which is $250. Cost includes lodging, meals and instruction for the week. Failure to register is a felony punishable by a fine of up to $250,000, up to 5 years in prison, Young men who will turn 26 in 1989 will be reaching an important milestone, according to the Selective Service System. Beginning on Jan. 1, 1989, men who were required to register with Selective Service in 1981 will be turning 26.
