Show he Thursday, Jan. 19, 1989 Times-lndepende- Carbon dioxide leases near wilderness area The Bureau of Land Management has issued a Record of Decision that will allow leasing of oil, gas, and carbon dioxide on federal lands adja- cent to the Phipps Box Death Hollow Wilderness Area, located in -- Garfield County. The controversial decision follows one made earlier by the U. S. Forest Service in the same area. The decisions had been vocally opposed by a number of environmental groups. These lands, managed primarily by the Forest Service, will be offered at a competitive sale to be held ion Feb. 28 at 10 a.m. at the Bureau of Land Management, Utah State Office, 324 South State Street, Fourth Floor Conference Room, Salt Lake City. Under federal leasing laws and the Utah Wilderness Act of 1984, the BLM is responsible for leasing oil, gas and carbon dioxide on these National Forest lands. Protests from two wilderness groups opposing leasing in the area were considered by the BLM, but .denied. This decision was in keeping with action taken earlier on similar appeals submitted to the Forest Service.
