Show The CEYSER PASS AREA IN PERSONS Sterling Scholar nominees to represent Grand County High School in the regional competition were named last week by the Sterling Scholar committee. The following students were nominated in 8 categories: Sharylanne Adamson, English; Alice Monica Foy, speechdrama; Holyoak, mathematics; Mike Hiett, social science; David Brady, foreign language; Janet Axtell, visual arts; Kathleen Clark, music; Kenneth Welling, general scholarship. The Sterling Scholar Awards program is sponsored by The Deseret News and KSL to recognize outstanding scholastic achievement of high school seniors. The original program was established in 1962. Kevin Donnelly, a producer on the series, is maintaining the Moab file, with the hope that the script will be used next season. He stressed that Moab was the perfect location for the story, which is about an anthropologist who is excavating a ruin at the edge of a golf course. Louis Gossett, Jr., who plays the anthropologist, has trouble with some developers who want to build around the golf course. Film Commission incumbents Antony Landsbury and Jim Mattingly faced seven other applicants for the two seats open on the board of directors. They, were to the board, but must be approved by the Grand County Commission in the January 23rd County Commission meeting before they can be fully reinstated. Other board members who will be serving this year are: Sheri Griffith, outgoing president of three years; Larry Campbell, outgoing vice president; Don Holyoak outgoing treasurer; Karl Tangren, Jim Kelly, and Jackie Johnson. The ninth seat on the board is held by a representative from the Grand County Travel Council, presently filled by Ber Knight This is a one-yeterm and will be appointed by the Travel Council in their January 19th meetings. In addition to the board, there are about two dozen and resource, members. All applicants who do not make the board of direccommittors are drafted onto contribute tees. Sal Winter recreation in La Sal Mountains shows a big increase Winter recreation use in the La Sal Mountains has greatly increased this winter according to Moab District Ranger Raymon Carling. Surveys conducted in the Gold Basin and Geyser Pass areas show use increasing significantly over last winter. Skiing and general recreation such as tubing and sightseeing have more than tripled while snowmobile use has remained about the same. In De- cember there were approximately 175 skiers, a 460 increase over December 1987. There were about 255 people taking part in general recreation activities, a 320 increase over last winter. There were about 25 snowmobilers, nearly the same as last December. Ranger Carling attributes the increase in use to the cooperation of the Grand County Travel Council, the Grand County Commission and the Forest Service. The advertising provided by the Travel Council has increased the public's awareness of the recreational opportunities in very pleased with the county avalanche forecast service. The U.S. Forest Service's newly established La Sal Avalanche Fore- Mayor Rey Lloyd Hatt informed the council that this is a premature move on CoWests part. Right now the legislature is establishing siting criteria that will probably now allow CoWest to build in Green River. The company says they must have this letter of inducement in case of the legislative policy regarding incinerators is changed. Mayor Hatt said this bonding issue is just a formality, and that by giving CoWest a letter of inducement, it enables Green River City to investigate the board members, officers, etc., of the company. The city is in negotiations with a company that builds and operates greenhouses whose main product is tomatoes. It is possible that heat could be provided by either natural incinergas or from a ator burning pharmaceuticals. This greenhouse would bring a great economic boost to Green River. Employment would be gained from work at the greenhouse, trucking of the tomatoes, and at a cannery for ketchup, salsa, stewed tomatoes. Currently, the burning of waste has no criteria exto abide by the Clean Air stancept dards, the council was told. This type of business is treated as any other and should not cause any negative impact The ash left from the burning process is similar to the cinders along railroad tracks. Once material has gone through the bum process, it is neutralized and safe to be used for many other projects, such as an additive to cement, a stabilizer to clay soil, used instead of gravel, and a variety of other uses.
