Newell church at 1st North and 1st East as the labor contribution for his father By and other family members. . Later they moved to a farm in what is now the Walker subdivision. As a young boy he often went with his father, who drove freight wagons between Thompson and Moab, a trip foat took four days. He drove may wagons himself as a young man and told often of bringing most of the brick and building materials for the original L.D.S. the Moab area. He continued similar work for the rest of his life and worked for the Forest Service, the Park Service, the Bureau of Public Roads. He directed the construction of over 1500 miles of roads in the forests and deserts of Utah to service mining, ranching and recreation. Some of his heavily used roads in the Moab area are the Shafer Trail, onto the Colorado River, the Min- eral Canyon Road onto the Green River and the road around Fisher Point on the North end of the LaSal Mountains. On March 20th, 1933 he married Irma Beach and to this union were bom two children, Patricia Peterson and Allen C. Newell. He is also survived by eight grandchildren, Bryan, Mark, Kirk and Paula Peterson; Roxayn, Allison, David and Robert Newell. He loved the LaSal Mountains and was an avid deer hunter for all of his active life. For many years there was an annual reunion of the Newell and Beach families during hunting seasons at the "Tin Roof cabin. After he retired, he and Irma spent most summers at his beloved Mountain home. To his many family and friends a stay at the "tin roof cabin was a warm and loving experience never to be forgotten. He will be missed, but his love, example, and friendship will always be next meeting of the Provisional League of Women Voters of Grand County this Saturday, March 12. Utah State Representative David Adams and State Senator Omar Bunnell will be informing their constituents in Grand County of the bills, resolutions and appropriations that passed the Utah State Legislature. The breakfast meeting will start this Saturday at 10 a.m. and last until noon. It is being held at Arches Dining Room, 182 S. Main, next to the Ramada Inn in Moab. Each legislator will speak for approximately 20 minutes concerning the bills that passed that they feel die award-winni- ng orado communities; Telluride, Aspen and Grand Junction. To Arches . . . James Dixon has been awarded the High School Senior position at Arches National Park. . Canyonlands Natural History Association and Arches National Park have created a position for a graduating senior to provide an opportunity to gain public contact skills and to leam the basic management principles of a bookstore business. James will work with National Park Service and Canyonlands Natural History As- With the recent acquisition of portable equipment, the artistry of Colorado Plateau images coupled with an almost poetic narrative laced with Native American story and music soundtrack, can be adapted to many theaters. In February, "The Canyon's Edge" was shown at Hansen Planetarium in Salt Lake City. On March 4th and 5th, the show was presented at The Nugget Theater in Telluride. Mesa College in Grand Junction will host a March 15th double showing and Aspen High School Auditorium will be the scene of a March 17th presentation. Canyonlands Field Institute, producer of "The Canyon's Edge," has sociation personnel providing visitor interpretation and will assist with the bookstore operation. This is the first year that the position has been available. Upon successful completion of the season, James will also receive a $500 bonusscholarship. ATTENDED FUNERAL Mr. and Mrs. Vaughn Taylor of Grand Junction and Homer Taylor of Blanding were here to attend the funeral services for their cousin, Alden Newell which were held Saturday at the LDS Church on 4th North. Newell Alden Burdick Newell passed away ,t his home in Moab on March 3, 988.' He war bom on August 7, 1907, the second child of eight children bom to George Almon Newell ifid Rebecca Dalton. He was a member of the L.D.S. Church and Was the last surviving member of his pioneer Moab family. CHe spent his early years working on his father's ranch, which was on the upper end of Poverty Flat, now known as Spanish Valley. He and his brothers rode horses to school for a number of years. mid-Marc- multi-med- ia announced that regular seasonal showings will resume in Moab at the theater in the Western Plaza Bam at the end of April. Opening nights will be free to the public as a preseason opportunity to Moab area residents. A special showing is also scheduled to the upcoming Rotary convention. "The Canyon's Edge" was the recent recipient, of the Utah Endowment for the Humanities Merit Award, presented in Salt Lake City on February 27th. In presenting the special recognition, UEH Executive Director Del-mo- Utah State University Horticulture Extension Specialist, Bill Varga, will be giving an ornamental pruning workshop on March 17, 1988 from p.m. Everyone will meet at 801 Locust Lane and do a walking pruning tour through the neighborhood. Sharon Myron, Grand County 1- -3 Extension Agent said, "Mr. Varga is exceptionally well trained in home landscaping maintenance and will be available to answer any questions." Some of the plants that will be used in the demonstration are forsythia, lilac, several evergreens, roses and others. The demonstration is free and everyone is invited to attend.
