Therefore be it resolved that the of March 1988, be declared National Middle Level week Week, and that the public be afforded special opportunities to visit middle level schools and participate in programs that focus on the nature of early adolescents and celebrate the ways in which our nation's schools respond to their needs and to the needs of the nation. Diana Kopka, Principal of Grand County Middle School, issued an County Middle School will celebrate the problems and joys of middle level education March 13 through 19. Perhaps the most striking characteristic of early adolescents is that they seem to change from model children to misunderstood monsters at least a dozen times a day. The changes bewilder parents,, but they are also unsettling to the students. One of the purposes of middle level education is to help our students, and their parents, to cope with these rapid changes and the emotional upheaval that seems to accompany the years from eleven to fourteen. "The middle school often seems like a neglected child," according to Ms. Kopka. While elementary schools have many volunteers and high schools have booster clubs and activities that involve the community, very few adults visit a middle school or volunteer services. "We have a critical need for volunteers at Grand County Middle School because of severe staff cuts," said Ms. Kopka. "We have compacted the curriculum of a five-da- y week into four days and we lost the sixth grade core staff. We are asking for volunteers to be in our classrooms to help the students with questions on assignments, to give individual attention to children in our crowded classes, and to help students feel that adults care about them." Ms. Kopka went on to say that students in the classrooms that do have volunteer assistance are doing much better than those in classes so crowded that a teacher, alone, cannot get to all the students in the room who need help. "We would also invited members of the community to come to the school to teach a class for a period, a day, or longer," she said, "not only during National Middle School but at any time during the year."
