The six weeks of training puts pilots through strenuous classroom combat, and exercises, support and evasion. The range at Nellis where these pilots train is designed with the latest intelligence available to be a Soviet state, complete with airfields, convoys, missile sites, and all the necessary radar and ground defenses to protect it. Norman is assigned to the 57th Aircraft Generation Squadron, a unit responsible for keeping the aircraft flying at Nellis. At Nellis we are taking fighter pilots and maintenance crews and training them to function in what they may encounter if hostile action was to occur. Nellis Air Force Base and the 6, range in Southern Nevada is located between the city that never sleeps, Las Vegas, and the recreation area of Lake Mead, where the average yearly temperature is a pleasant 79 degrees.
