There were over 77 participants. Jeff Thurston, 5th grader, Sean Dalton, 5th grader, and Marisa DeLay, from the 4th grade, are Southeasts finalists and will participate in the school district Spelling Bee on March 19, 7 p.m. at Star Hall. The Book-I- t Program, sponsored by Pizza Hut, ended in February. And Mrs. Bloxhams Martinez, McEl-hane- program sponsored by Pizza Hut and Pepsi Jean Letelliers first grade class enjoyed a feast at the local Pizza Hut on March 12 by having the highest percentage . of their class read a required amount of books for the Book-I- t Program. They also had a few guesthelpers from the PTA On March 27, 1987, Southeast is having a Wind Festival. We will be celebrating kites, pinwheels, windsocks, paper airplanes, anything that blows or flies in the wind. In the morning, kindergarten, first and second grades will fly their wind objects, enjoy bubbles and end with a picnic lunch. Third through fifth grades will enjoy the afternoon doing the same type of things. Each class will make a project kite which will be entered in a contest. Kites (or whatever) will be on display Thursday, March 26, and judged that day. Any adults who have a yen to go fly a kite and would like to participate are welcome to join us. with them. The Book-- It program was started i, CO last year by Pizza nationwide to encourage 5 graders to read a certain amount of books each month. They have been re - cognized by the Secretary of Education William Bennett, and President Reagan for their efforts. The kids are given a Book-I- t Button with places for 5 stars. A star is received after each reading requirement then they are given a certificate to take to Pizza Hut stating they have accomplished their goal and in turn receive a free personal pan pizza. Mr. Edgerton said that in one week alone he gave out 112 Book-I- t certificates, with the average each Last year in the week being CO spent $9 U.S. Pizza 6 million on this program and million this year, with plans to continue during the next school year. 80-10- 0. Hut-Pep- si $14-$1- Hut-Peps- , League of women Voters chart course for the year EQUINOX CELEBRATION The Moab Community Coop invites everyone to join in the Spring Equinox Celebration Friday, March 20. A pot luck beginning at 5:30 will be followed by the presentation of Mitchell Mays slide show Windows to the infinite at 7:30 at the Coop. And to wrap up the evening, Dave Steward will provide entertainment for socializing. All events are free and kids are especially welcome. Call the Coop for details. The League of Women Voters of Grand County (unit at large) met Saturday, March 14, and charted the course for the next year for the local unit, according to League President Cynthia Smith. Those persons present worked on bylaw revisions, the upcoming budget, and the Leagues ' Community Study. A nominating committee was formed for election of officers. Nominations will be finalized at the April meeting, and election of officers will take place at the annual meeting in May. Anyone interested in nominating an officer should contact Travis Trittschuh, Mary Plumb, or Joan Gough. Currently the local officers are President Cynthia Smith, Vice President Helen Sue Whitney, Secretary Joyce Thomas, Treasurer Annette Greenberg, and Public Relations Director Mary Plumb. In other business, a report was given by Joan Gough, director of the group called Citizens for the Voted Leeway. Cynthia Smith represents the League on that group, and plans are underway to contact every registered voter in support of the April 28 leeway election. The voted leeway is needed to help with the budget crisis for Grand County Schools. Tina Brown gave a report on the high school seat belt program. She said fatalities have occurred in vehicular accidents at speeds as little as 12 miles per hour, and that many accidents occur within 25 RETURNED TO IDAHO Mr. and Mrs. Dahl Zohner and children from Boise, Idaho left for their home Monday. Mrs. Zohner had been in Moab this past week helping her daughter Nina Rose and family. They welcomed a new grandson born to Nina Rose and Kevin Harmison. a . She outlined a program aimed at increasing seat belt use, and the local League donated $20 toward the program. The League of Women Voters is a political ornonprofit, to promote works that ganization active citizen involvement in government. Box 205, Moab, Utah 84532. non-partis- LOCAL TAKES TWO AWARDS A car owned by Robert Talley, Moab, received two awards in the 10th Annual World of Wheels Auto Show held in Grand Junction, Colorado March 1987. The car, a restored 1957 Chevy Belair two door hardtop, received a trophy for first place in the Early Conservative Hartop-Streclass and a plaque for Best Street. This was Bobs first show. Restoration efforts were begun in 1984 and are ongoing. Bob looks forward to entering the car in other shows. 13-1- 5, et VISITED IN PROVO Lowell Bailey and Lynn Pipkin spent a few days in Provo last week. On return home Mathew Bailey from Provo came home for a visit. While here Lowell and Marlene Bailey had a family portrait made of all the family together at the Emporium building during the "weekend.
