Show A4The Timeslndependent, Thursday, Mar. 27, 1986 Dead Horse Point begins new visitor season Economic Data Task Force charts course in Moab by Joan Gough The Economic Data Task Force of the Economic Revitalization Program met Friday, March 21 at the Employment Office. This first meeting of the task force was largely an organizational meeting. For the most part, task force members have education and experience in economics and statistics. Brad Barber drove down from Salt Lake to meet with the task force. An economist with the State Planning Office, he has access to a lot of facts and figures which could be useful to Moab in community development. Even more importantly, he can help interpret the figures so that they are meaningful to the lay person and the members of other task forces now working on various projects. Brads help is an investment by the state in Moabs economic future. The purpose of the Economic Data Task Force is to help other groups, task forces, to make projections about the effect of their projects on the economic development of the community. For example, if the golf course development goes ahead what will that mean to a laundry operator, a carpenter, or a florist? Accurate projections can help people make practical decisions based on more than hunches and guesses. The task force has several projects underway. Don Knowles and Ken Curtis will start to assess the impact of the golf course project on the entire community. Bob Milton will look at the difference to the economy if people were to shop locally instead of taking their dollars to Grand Junction and Salt Lake. The impact of the film industry will be assessed, and results of 150 interviews by the Rim Rock Road Runners will be evaluated. Those interviews were with participants of the half marathon and 5 mile run. Hopefully, similar interviews will be conducted with the Jeep Safari people. Members of the committee are Ken Curtis, Job Service; Bob Milton, BLM; Eleanor Inskip, Moab Area Promotion; Don Knowles, Moab Furniture and Appliance; Craig Bigler, facilitator; Joan Gough, League of Women Voters; Bob Greenberg, Four Comers Mental Health; and Brad Barber, Utah State Office of Planning. Jim has voiced hoped that the Moab area will become an art production center; such as, Santa Fe, New Mexico, or Sedona, Arizona. Jim has been actively seeking support, both financial and artistically, for starting an art school for the serious student. Mr. Franklin, born in Galveston, Texas and a twenty-yeresident of Austin, Texas, moved to Castle Valley in 1976. He is responsible for popularizing the Armadillo in Texas through a series of posters, paintings, and drawings begun in 1968. The Armadillo is now the unofficial state animal. Franklin was given a special citation by the Texas State Legislature in 1980 for this contribution to Texas culture. A series ef paintings, A tribute to the Longneck Bottle, for Lone-sta- r Beer, utilized the same technique of focusing on a mundane object and giving it new life. He brought vast popularity to the Longneck bottles which were about to be discontinued. Now, all major beer companies feature the long-- , necks. Jim says, I was not glorigying the beer, but celebrating an artifact of American culture. His work has a firm footing in realistic classical styles, progressing into abstraction. He is equally moved by Rembrandt and Picasso. According to Jim, we live in an abstract world and the more realistically one paints, the more one comes to see the shapes and colors as being abstract. What does a tree look like anyhow? Ones description of a tree would be abstract. The vast sculpture gardens of the Canyonlands present an artist with a lifetime of work. Jim says, To be realistic, this country is abstract!
