Both were recognized with prominent performance slots during the show broadcast live by CBS from the Grand Ole Opry House. "Man, she's awesome," said host Vince Gill after the Rimes sang the evening's first number, her hit "Blue." Rimes lost out on the Horizon Award for most promising artist to Bryan White, and voters picked Strait's "Check Yes or No" instead of her Patsy "Blue." Pleading for patience before rendering a judgment, the president wrapped up the meetings Wednesday, acknowledging, "We have not made as much progress as I wish we had." But like a lawyer making closing arguments to a skeptical jury, he also said, "We are in better shape than we were two days ago." If last week's violence on the West Bank and in Gaza had persisted, he said, "imagine where we would be now." As w ith so many other things in the Simpson case, Fuhrman's plea came on a day that bordered on the surreal. Not only was Wednesday the r anniversary of the day the jury voted to acquit Simpson in the slayings of ex wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ronald Goldman. Fuhrman's case was resolved with a speed unchar-- ; acteristic of the Simpson case. After three morning hearings, Superior Court Judge John Oud- erkirk was presented with a plea agreement, read it over lunch, and approved it before the afternoon newscasts, one-yea- ; I I ; ; ! State prosecutors claimed in a complaint that Fuhrman perjured himself on March 15. 1995, by telling F. Lee Bailey in the Simpson criminal trial "that he had not addressed any black person as a 'nigger' or spoken about black people as 'niggers' in the past 10 years." Four defense witnesses contradicted that testimony, including an aspiring screenwriter who testified that Fuhrman said the word at least 41 times on tapes they made while working on a screenplay over the previous decade. Jurors were played one example from the tapes. Before he entered the plea. Fuhrman was served with a subpoena from Simpson's lawyers ordering him to testify in Simpson's civil trial, now in the jury selection stage in Santa Monica. The families of Ms. Simpson and Goldman are suing Simpson unspecified damages, seeking to hold him responsible for the June 12, 1994, slayings. fr AUTO: (Continued from Page Al) Oge said reducing vehicle emissions through better repairs will reduce air pollution and prepare the state for the environmental demands the 2002 Winter Games will create. Nielsen said better repairs will also mean a savings in money and gasoline for motorists. It will also mean conserving the nation's natural resources. The state has already taken the first steps in curbing air pollution by requiring pollution controls on industrial sources and installing control measures on cars. "The challenge for you today is no less awesome, no less difficult or no less achievable," Nielsen said. To further that goal, the EPA is working with the state on estab: lishing the Weber State Center for Automotive Science and Technology at Weber State University in Ogden. The center is a training facility where mechanics can learn how to repair polluting cars and handle the latest in emissions testing equipment. The center will be dedicated tonight. Rick DeMoss, an automotive instructor at WSU, said the center will provide training to bring mechanics up to speed for the automobile's second century on America's roads. DeMoss Mechanics, said, should be willing to do analysis and determine the root cause of a vehicle problem before making repairs. Ralph Clegg, Utah County Health Department deputy director, said repairs are the key element in any air pollution plan, regardless of the testing method the government chooses to use. "If you identify them and don't fix them, you haven't done anything," Clegg said. Utah County has established a program for mechanic training at Utah Valley State College as part of an alternative to enhanced emissions testing. Clegg and Robert Campbell, UVSC's automotive technology program coordinator, said they hoped to incorporate a few ideas from Weber State's program into the UVSC class. But Paul Ashton, executive director of the Petroleum Retailers Organization, said advances in repairs are going to be driven by economics as much as rules requiring thorough repairs. flii Quality The following information is taken from the Wasatch Front air pollution report compiled by the Utah Division of Air Quality.
