Co-creat- - has gone only by her first name as a singing star who's now a Grammy Award nominee for Best New Artist as a teenlot with of a entries to make in her ager diary as she adjusts to her new stepmother (stage veteran Sheryl Lee Ralph). The latter lady wants to establish a good relationship with Moesha, but the youngster's typical rites of growing up often seem to thwart that effort. Additional regulars include William Allen Young ("A Soldier's Story") as Moesha's father, Lamont Bentley as her sibling-lik- e neighbor, Countess Vaughn as her best friend and Yvette Wilson as the operator of the hangout of choice for Moesha and com- - pany. Notable past credits: She's the title star at age 16, but "Moesha" isn't Norwood's experience, since she also was featured on the short-live- d ABC show "Thea" a couple of seasons ago. After that series ended, she went into the studio to record for the Atlantic label ... resulting in the debut album "Brandy," which went triple platinum with sales of more than 3 million copies. It's yielded several hit singles, Including "I Wanna Be Down" and "Baby," the latter earning her another Grammy nomination for Best Female Rhythm & Blues Performance. Already a winner of Soul Train and Billboard Awards, Norwood has had lots of other television exposure lately, having performed with Tony Bennett on his recent "Here's to the Ladies" concert special, and also having been featured in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade and on "Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin" Eve '96." She's also scheduled to perform at Super Bowl. XXX next Sunday, and she's recorded a remake of the Michael Jackson hit "Rock With You" for the new Qgincy Jones album, "Q's Jook Joint." On the dissatisfaction she felt during "Thea's" run: "I wasn't used to not doing anything. Thea (Vidale) was the star of that show, and that was it. Now, on 'Moesha,' don't say that I'm the show and that's it. If didn't have Sheryl Lee or Lamont or the rest of the cast, just couldn't do it. It's OUR show, and I think that's where Thea' went wrong." On likening acting in front of a studio audience to singing before a concert crowd: "It makes you better when someone is paying attention to you. It makes you hit your marks and know your lines better, so that's not a hard thing for me at I I I I I I all." On committing to a weekly series while her music career is heating up: "I had to think about it, because so many people were telling me things like, "You won't sell any records if you have a television show.' don't think that's true, though, because I'm not playing a 'crazy character. This is a person, so people won't look at me like I'm unreal. I'm still a singer first, but acting is where my heart is right now, and that's what want to concentrate on." On the intention not to have Norwood sing on the series: "Moesha wants to see where her career in writing is going to go, so her talent is totally different from my own, and that's the way want to keep it. I want acting and singing to be separate for I true-to-li- fe I I me." On getting used to hearing her songs on the radio: "The first couple of months, I was like, They're playing my song!' Now, it's like, They're STILL playing my song?' There's a difference, but I got lucky and got the second single off the 'Waiting to Exhale' soundtrack. In Sunday and Monday's new ABC miniseries "Innocent Victims," based on e the book by Scott Whisnant, Emmy-winnHal Holbrook plays the father of a soldier ("Northern Exposure" alumnus John Corbett) suspected of the brutal murders of a woman and her two young children ... a situation their North Carolina city was particularly sensitized to, since it came in the wake of the similar "Fatal Vision" killings for which Dr. Jeffrey MacDonald was convicted. The accused man professes innocence, and though several witnesses eventually change their testimony in his favor, he's still found guilty and sentenced to death. That prompts his lawyers (Rick Schroder Life's" Tom Irwin) to and "My to his case retried; former attempt get "Golden Girl" Rue McClanahan and Howard Hesseman ("WKRP. in Cincinnati," "Head of the Class") also appear in the drama, directed by Gilbert kind." In that sense, Holbrook agrees that a project like "Innocent Victims' is something of a luxury, as opposed to the specifics imposed by a venture such as his true-crim- on-scre- en Cates, executive producer of the past several Oscar shows. Currently starring as Willy Loman in a Florida stage revival of "Death of a Salesman," Holbrook says in spite the specifics of "Innocent Victims," he didn't have to do much research. "You relate it to people that you knew," he reasons. "Imagine your son being in a spot like that, then relate it to the actor doing that part. You just put that ail together. Any human experience has a personal side to it (for an actor), because we're all Indeed, though he has played many characters in lofty positions such as a senator (in the component of TV's "The Bold Ones" literally called "The Senator"), a NASA official ("Capricorn One") and a senior law partner ("The Firm") believes there's an " link between such figures and the - works were "Perry Mason Mystery" movies in which he played "Wild Bill" McKenzie, a flamboyant lawyer meant to supplant the late Raymond Burr's popular embodiment of Mason. "What basically ever-prese- nt "every-man.- happened was that the networks are don't distinguish things that way," he confirms. "It's just different material, that's all. Just because a man is a senator, you can't play 'a senator"; you play tha human being who happens to BE a senator. The whole idea behind playing someone like Abraham Lincoln (one of Holbrook's "I roles, in 'Sandburg's tha man behind the r' I human." g stage "I'm I So-Call- Lincoln") is to find "Mark Twain Tonight!" playing myself more directly, without any effort to characterize, so to speak. don't have to assume any particular accent, attitude or behavioral pattern, unlike those that would be necessary to fit Twain or Lincoln or whoever. It's more relaxing, and you just try to be real." Holbrook claims his attempt to do that in "Innocent Victims" was helped greatly "wife" McClanahan, by his whom he deems "a really fine actress. Also, she's a real theater person, and I love people who have been trained in that. They have a sense of tradition, a sense of how to behave (professionally)." The same applies to director Cates in the view of Holbrook, who did a staging of "I Never Sang for My Father" with him nearly 30 years ago. The actor says, "I've never run into such a considerate organization. It's very disarming." That stage background remains important to Holbrook, though he concedes, "I didn't go back to the theater for a pretty long stretch, probably eight or nine years, back in the 70s. really missed it, especially the quality of the material, and also dealing with an audience and other actors over the course of an evening. Doing a solo show like 'Mark Twain' is fine, but being in a play with other actors is a different experience, and a very challenging one. There are a number of wonderful roles I can still play at my ago. I did two productions of 'King Lear" recently, and I had a great time."
