Show ,. ., ...I... .,. '. Television Q&A RIDERS' (Continued frosa Page UI i , Lssa! By JAY BOBBIN, Tribune Media Services l) Made on location in Utah by director Charles Haid (who played Renko on "Kill Street Blues"), the saga Henry Thomas ("Legends of the Fall," "E.T.: The as the Madigan character's ranch hand; Robin Tunney and G.D. Spradlin ("North Dallas Forty") also appear. Though it hasn't happened often, Harris and Madigan relish any opportunity they have to team professionally. "It was a good 10 years since the last time (in the drama 'Alamo Bay"), so this was a joy," Harris says. "I couldn't believe we hadn't worked together in that long. This is a project that I got started way back in the when I bought the rights to the novel. Then, I enticed Amy into doing it with me ... and since we it, we decided to cast ourselves in it" While "Riders of the Purple Sage" marks the first literal western Harris ever has performed in, Madigan flirted with the genre a number of years ago by in the mini series "Eureka Stockade." She claims, Tm a big western fan, and when Ed found this book many years ago, he gave it to me to read. One of the most attractive things to us about this was not only to work together, but to have it be a western, and Turner (the company that owns TNT) is a great place to that. They allowed us to do the script we had, and to be very involved in all ways." Having initialed the "Riders" remake, Harris explains that the print version "just swept me away. I just thought it was beautifully written. I'd always seen it being a (theatrically released) feature, but we had the opportunity to do it this way. Yd love to do more west-em- s, but during most of my career, they haven't been making a lot of them. I started working when the genre was dying out, and it's only recently that they've sort of come back to life." co-sta- rs ") mld-'SO- s, Q: I've heard that this is Sela Ward's last season on "Sisters." Is that true? A: Those who watch the NBC series closely may notice that the actress has been appearing a bit less this season overall, bat as it turns out it's just been announced that the series win be ending in May any- Made rather logical by the title, both Harris and Madigan spend a good deal of time on horseback in "Riders of the Purple Sage," and Harris (who's also on view at theaters now, opposite Sally Field, in "Eye for an Eye") reports that the two of them "both have ridden in the past We're not the greatest, but we got out there and practiced, and we eventually felt pretty comfortable up there." Doing a western is yet another unpredictable turn in the careers of Harris and Madigan, who both have steered as clear of typecasting as possible ... Harris in such films as "The Right Stuff," "The Abyss" and "The Firm," and Madigan in the controversial "Roe vs. Wade" and Lifetime's AIDS-relaie- d drama "And Then There Was One" (the latter earning her a Cable ACE Award). The actress reasons, "It's the material, first and foremost, that dictates your decisions. If something's a little darker or a little stranger or a little twisted, it appeals to me." Such pursuits can place Madigan and Harris in different parts of the country, if not the world, when they're doing respective jobs at the samtf time. However, Harris maintains, "We've actually been pretty fortunate, in that it's worked itself out. We've never really spent that much time away from each other. I might be working on something and Amy will be with me, then she'll start something else and I'll go to be with her. We try to stick together pretty much." That brand of support was helpful during the making of "Riders of the Purple Sage," since Madigan concedes that the process of filming it was rigorous: "We shot 90 percent of it outside, and even though the story isn't really set in Utah, we wanted the production value that TV-mov- ie gave us. It was 1 10 degrees, hoofing it up canyons, and everybody had to carry in all the equipment to get some shots. It was very rugged, but I also think that served to make the film better." Harris adds, "Everybody really cared about it, because they knew that we cared about it That kind of energy comes down from the top, and Charlie (Haid) is a very enthusiastic guy. He turned down some other jobs that were probably more lucrative to do this, and we had a really good bunch of folks who worked real ' bard." That fact mirrors author Grey's original approach to "Riders of the Purple Sage" in the view of Harris, who says, "He got right in there. He was not afraid to deal with character and emotion, and the complexity of being a human being. My character Lassiter certainly goes through a let of changes in this story.
