Show ftoto JfrjdaK Cute catalog has a worthwhile goal By BARBARA MAYER For AP Special Features The idea behind a new catalog of home furnishings, accessories and gifts is simple: Established artists helping emerging artists. The catalog. Art Matters, sells products with designs from artists who have made it to help provide direct grants to those still struggling. The publisher is Art Matters Inc., a private foundation in New York City that emphasizes support for artists on the cutting edge. Since its founding in 1985, Art Matters has given nearly S3 million to some 3,000 artists working in traditional media such as painting and sculpture and new media such as video and performance art. "The idea is to raise money to be able to help more artists," says Cee Scott Brown, executive vice president. "We get over 4,000 applications a year, and we can only fund about 200." William Wegman probably is n artist whose work the is represented in the catalog. His photographs of dogs that take on human traits sell in galleries for well into five figures. "Dusted." an image of his dog, Man Ray, is available through the catalog as a plate for SI 25 in a limited edition of 250. Some other artists who are now received a boost from Art Matters early in their careers, which explains why there are gift items by internationally known artists such as Jenny Holzer and Karen Finley. Holzer, the first American best-know- 12-in- woman with a solo show at the prestigious Venice (Italy) Biennial exhibition in 1990. has contributed and caps. drinking glasses, Performance artist Finley has contributed coffee mugs with messages drawn from her book, "Enough Is Enough." Prices for the catalog's more than 200 products range from S6 for a pound of rubber bands with the Art Matters Logo to $900 for a handmade quilt. Among interesting selections for the home are two '50s-styl- e table lamps by Lyn Godley and Lloyd Schwan, $60 in red, $62 in green. The Sleepytime lamp, SI 24 by Rodney Alien Trice, is a cross between art and function. The base is a kettle, the shade a colander turned upside down. Wall plates for light switches in the shape of an angel, $27, are made from recycled oil drums by Haitian folk artists. For kids' rooms, there's a lamp kit, $20. A cross between a toy and home accessory, the kit for ages 6 and up includes all of the components for a bedside lamp, including white shade and a base and non-toxpaints and decorations. Also for kids is a corrugated cardboard playhouse, $32, that can be assembled in five ways. A vinyl shower curtain, $24, by Nancy and Claude Kent features drawings of classic items of furniture such as an Eames chair. Stoneware pet bowls, $39, and treat jars, $27, are decorated with bones for dogs and mice for cats. The catalog also has its version of the popular gift. Instead of fruit or flowers. Art Matters offers candles. Prices ready-to-pai- .p&LYR, 27ftt995 gM&zjftP, ' range from $65 for three months to $265 for a year, plus $5 a month for shipping and handling.
