They have been totally accepted by the Jewish community, although the children are Chinese in appearance. It's so nice when people stop J. I., looking at our differences. Boca Raton, Fla. I have been to ex to court for two my taking years. The agency files the necessary papers, but the court system has failed miserably. I have enough judgments of contempt to wallpaper my entire house! These deadbeat parents are not being taken to jail or losing their licenses like the judges tell them. My ex laughs his way out of the courtroom with "30 more days" to pay. He knows that in order to be brought back I have to initiate a new complaint. He even told me he doesn't make his support payments regularly because he knows he can get away with it. Occasionally, he makes a small token payment. He knows how many days it takes for the court to catch up. Are these judges so ignorant that they cannot figure this out? They say they are tough on deadbeat parents, but they have not shown it by me. I wish "Not Asking for Much in Delray" good Gone Sour on the System, luck. Lake Worth. Fla. Dear Sour: For anyone to go through this is ridiculous! I don't think the judges are ignorant, but it does sometimes seem that they don't care. Judges must deal with overloaded dockets and overcrowded prisons, but if there were tougher punishments, there wouldn't be so many deadbeat parents. Truth is, our whole judicial system needs serious reform. In the meantime, let's hope "Not Asking for Much" has a sweeter experience in court. Our entry points to literacy have obviously changed in 30 years. Our culture has changed over thai time, and I'm not going to argue that it has changed for the better. But one of the surest way to upgrade American culture is to upgrade the reading ability of the next generation, and we're not going to accomplish that by taking tools away from teachers and librarians. Ask any teacher; most will tell you it's a victory for education when kids find something they even if it's want to read "Goosebumps." For that matter, I've read some of the "Goosebumps" books, and they are not too scary or disturbing kid. Any child for a with parents who provide a loving, stable home life and effective moral guidance can handle "The Headless Ghost" or "The Haunled Mask" without becoming a school yard pariah. Of course, it's always loving, moral parents who want to ban books. Neglectful parents don't care, and they've got far bigger problems to deal with than the books their kids might be readwell-adjust- ing. The loving, moral parents never see themselves as book banners or censors, either, but they are. The) always think they're the first ones who ever came up with the idea of protecting the public from material but they deem objectionable, they're not. It's an old. old story, and far more frightening than anything between the covers of a "Goosebumps" book. Rick Shefchik writes for the Saint Paul Pioneer Press. Frank Baum is still a bit beyond him, so I'd be glad if he read "Charlotte's Web." I'd even settle for him reading one of the "Star Wars" novels we bought for him. Right now, however, the books he reads for pleasure, when we can get him to read for pleasure, are "Goosebumps" books. If this means he'll grow up to be one of those people you see sitting behind a counter or next to you on the bus reading the latest Stephen King novel, I can live with that. At least he'll be reading. The parents who favor removing "Goosebumps" books from their school library shelves are making a terrible mistake, and it has nothing to do with whether or not "Goosebumps" books are good literature. (They're not.) It has nothing to do with whether or not "Goosebumps" books are scary. (They are.) It has everything to do with declining literacy rates in the United States. We are slowly becoming a nation of illiterates, and not in the sense that many young people can't appreciate a good book anymore. The problem is far worse; many young people can't even read a bad book anymore. You don't lead a child to Shakespeare by making them read Shakespeare. You must first teach them to read. Kids who don't find anything in books to stimulate their imagination won't develop a reading habit.
