Among other awards, "Beast on the Moon" won the American Theatre Critics Association 19 Osboin Award for an outstanding new play by an emerging playwright. Kulinoski's play is an intimate portrait of the marriage of Milwaukee photographer Aram Tomasian and his r bride Seta. During an eclipse, the Turks Miperstiliously shot cannons at a beast supposedly obscuring the moon. Aram and Seta rid themselves of the beasts obscuring their happiness only when they first overcome their terror of the atrocities which orphaned them and then put away the relics and attitudes of the past. Janet Bird was honored upon her retirement as an SMA volunteer. The American Fork woman holds the record as the museum's longest standing volunteer, having served since the 1940s. In addition, she also served twice as president of the Hafen-Dalli- n Guild which supports the museum through its fundraising efforts, and received the Distinguished Service Award. She and her daughter, Evelyn FanSaturnin, have done a three-hoday shift at the museum for years. May J. Miller, 80, was named Volunteer of the Year. She remembers when ground was broken for the museum in the 1930s. "Nobody thought it could possibly be built during the Depression," she said. She got a kick out of the many people who asked at the front desk, "What did this used to be before?" People couldn't believe it was built originally as an art museum, but Miller would tell them, "We had foresight!" Springville high school senior Jonathan Miner was given the Outstanding Youth Service Award for his work in putting the museum's art on the Internet. Outgoing Hafen-Dalli- n Guild president Nancy Miller Cowley was also given a plaque. The 1997 officers for the Hafen-Dalli- n Guild were introduced. Richard Kalinoski traveled from Rochester, New York, to Salt Lake City for the play's opening on January 18 and for a staged reading at SLAC on January 20 of his new play "Mother College." Yet to be produced, this is set in a mad- cap but, nonetheless, not too unusual theatre department despite its hilarious hiring and firing and technical and artistic-dispute- With "Beast on the Moon".
