HARRIS Special to The Daily Herald wide gulf between actors and audience. Of the 10 scenes in the five acts, nine are distinct settings, and yet the distinctions between council chambers or taverns or battlefields are not at all clear, adding Shakespeare's "Henrv V" is placing al Brigham Young University in a new production directed by' Rodger D. Sorensen in his directorial debut at BYU after 17 at Ricks College. years ' This play can show the Prince Hal of Henry IV, Part II, grown into a wise King, acting in the best interests of England. this production, however, even j In tliuugh Sorensen intends his Henry 10 be "a just and moral King," too often he seems either cruel or merely 'petulant. Yes, as indicated in the program note, the play does warn "dgainst glorifying war," but, instead of Henry's war against France being "unavoidable," it appears to be carried out on a whim. Designer Eric Fielding's wooden stage, a nice variation on the Cflo'be, offers a large circular down-froplaying space, but, nonetheless,, much of the action is directed onto the back platforms, creating a Play Dcito unnecessary confusion to a complicated narrative. And the dim lighting compounds the problem. Stuart Lewis' costumes seem too drab even for soldiers, und the baggy trousers give a contemporary flavor to a play set in the fifteenth century. But most troublesome are the textures stiff burlap for armor and loose knit for shirts, giving an amateurish look to the production. The variety of heraldic-insignipainted on the burlap is nice, however, as are the capes, robes, and women's costumes. Much of the play is hard to hear and understand because the actors are playing upstage and do not pro- a nt ject sufficiently or are not well practiced in Shakespearean diction. A notable exception is Christopher Erin Kendrick cast as both Cambridge and Mont joy. Tim Robinson is a credible King Henry but. at times, lacks the vocal resonance to carry the scenes as directed. The most enjoyable scenes are the two with Jennifer Buster as an especially charming Princess s v . Katherine: the first when Julie Manning as Alice teaches her English and the second when she has Alice translate Henry's marriage propos- al. Although a chance to see a Shakespeare play should not be missed, this present production simply does not live up to the usual BYU quality. Certainly, the valiant efforts of the cast are admirable; still, many aspects of the production miss the mark. I" continues "Henry thnmzh Feb. S'. " To make matters worse, massive crowds have shui down most takeout service from the sandwich shops and swank Main Street eateries. For a hungry, tired actress, the only thing to do is sprawl on a bed. chomp on a Whopper and fries and talk some more. She's happy to help out the films, but that joyous, kinetic screen persona she displayed to such great effect in "Party Girl" ly being the hippest girl in town wears thin, and the reality of doing independent films turns into a lot of hard work and a fight for recognition. "Kicking and Screaming," "Basquiat" and "Sleep With Me." She works with many first time directors, on small shoots with little fanfare. Indie directors now flock to her as the only actress who can create the w acky characters they need. 'There was nobody else but Parker." says "House of Yes" director Mark Waters, who cast woman obsessed w ith the Kennedy assassination, which she erotically w ith her brother (Josh Hamilton.1. Posey won a Special Jury Prize on Saturday night for her performance in the film, which will be released by Miramax. But even that doesn't seem to be enough for Posey to achieve thai traditional Hollywood star status. "Only here in Sundance is Parker the queen of the hill." Waters says. "When I told my mother Parker Posey's in my mm ie and she's perfect, she asked. 'What lias she been in'.'"" The expectations of the star game simply frustrate the actress. "Somebody told me I'm this year's Lili Taylor." she say s angri -- ly. "I said. 'No. I'm not.' When people compare you. they're not saying. 'Congratulations, you're special."
