Fires t lodge and destroyed a two other buildings atop Vail Mountain early Monday causing an estimated $12 million in damage, and authorities said arson was suspected. Firefighters had to contend with snow, steep terrain and a lack of water at 11,000 feet. At least four other buildings that house ski lift machinery were damaged, but Vail officials said the nation's busiest ski resort would open as planned on VAIL, 550-sea- Nov. 6. No injuries were reported. More than 100 firefighters from throughout Eagle County brought the fires under control by about noon, eight hours after the flames were first spotted. Two Elk Restaurant, which featured hundreds of carved wooden chairs and massive wooden ceiling beams, burned to the ground. The popular restaurant alone was worth an estimated $8 million to $12 million, according to Andy Daly, president of Vail Associates, who said he was just "grateful that the fire was not worse than it was." Up to 6 inches of snow covered the rugged area where the fires occurred. vehicles were deployed to pull water tanks up to the scene. One of the four buildings damaged houses the engine structure of chair lift 5, which provides access to the back bowl ski areas where Vail Mountain is planning a controversial 1,000-acrexpansion. It could take two months before the lift is up and rune ning, Daly said. Workers began clearing the expansion area over the week- end. The plans for expansion into back bowls have drawn protests and boycotts from environmentalists. The University of Colorado's Student Environmental Board canceled bus service to Vail. A group of backcountry skiers, calling itself the 11th Mountain Division, claims conditions required for approval of the expansion will block access to cross country skiers. Last month a federal judge dismissed a lawsuit by environmentalists who claimed the resort's planned expansion could harm the lynx, which has been proposed for the federal threatened species list. Vail has agreed to take steps to preserve lynx habitat during the the north-facin- g The lynx hasn't been seen in the region since 1973, but environmentalists believe the area would be the best place to the animal. Besides the lodge at elevation 11,200 feet, the fires destroyed the nearby Camp skier day shelter, a outdoor picnic stop located at the top of the China Bowl ski area. About a mile away, the ski patrol headquarters building was gutted. Kim Andree, a spokeswoman at the Eagle County Sheriff Office, said it was too early t speculate about the cause ot the fires. Nothing was being ruled out, but all the affected buildings share gas and electricity lines, she said, and "it is not impossible that this was an rein-trodu- X accident." Ed Nesselroad, from the U.S. Forest Service's regional office, said the cause "is suspected arson. "The fires are spread alonjrjri mile of mountaintop in a ntfif. ber of specific locations ajvj there was no lightning night," he said. "If you can out natural causes you look pretty quickly to human." On Monday, environmentalists denounced the suspected arson, li iw |
