A female beetle is bug-catchi- put in the tent. She releases pheromones and attracts male beetles, which are then counted by forest officials. Infirm trees Bark beetles look like elongated black ladybugs. They target old and weak trees by burrowing until they reach the shiny layer just beneath the bark. There, the beetles lay their eggs, which quickly hatch into larvae. The larvae feed on the tree, making their way all around the tree under the bark. This ruins the tree's ability to transfer food from its roots. It usually takes a few months for the tree to die. The problem with the beetles is there isn't much forest officials can do to prevent them from munching on the trees or to get rid of them once Trees that aren't infested too heavily can be cut down for use as lumber. If an area is too infested, however, trees will be burned, . such as the burn in A 'seffii. v of Hobbk Creek Canyon on Oct. 14. m controlled burn there incinerated 800 acres of ' trees. Forest officials toyed with the idea of allowing people to collect the trees for firewood as they have done with some areas. The only problem with that is when trees are heavily infested, if people bring the wood out full of eggs it can spread," said Loyal Clark, the public relations officer for the Uinta National Forest. beetle-infeste- d they begin snacking. The forum will begin at 7 p.m. at Pleasant Grove Junior High School, 810 N. 100 East. Candidates for districts 57 and 58 of the Utah House of Representatives, Utah County sheriff, clerkauditor, assessor, attorney, surveyor, treasurer ALPINE SCHOOL DISTRICT Students at two elementary schools in the district may face double sessions next and county commission seats "A" and "B" have been invited. The public is invited to meet the candidates informally at 7 p.m. in the hallway by the main office. A formal question-and-answe- r session in the auditorium will then run from 7:30-8:3p.m. 0 fall. Double sessions, in which two schools conduct classes at one school, could be needed at Northridge or Orchard elementary schools in Orem because a new elementary school is being built near 1000 North and 1250 East in Orem. And Principal Stan Butler of Manila Elementary School in Pleasant Grove said he's counting on double sessions at the school next fall because a new elementary school is being built in Pleasant Grove's Strawberry Point area at 600 N. 1300 West. The double sessions could continue for about seven weeks until the two new schools open. District officials will make the decision before summer break. Under a double session schedule, one school generally starts earlier in the morning than normal and ends around noon. The second school then classes in the afternoon and ends around 5 p.m. The schools will cost about $6.5 million each. The money will come from a $60 million bond district voters approved in June, said Alpine School District Superintendent Steven Baugh. Manila Elementary School was the last school in the district to experience double sessions. Students there dealt with double sessions until Cedar School Ridge Elementary said. Butler in 1997, opened Alpine School Board mem- bers moved the Pleasant Grove school ahead of a school planned for west Alpine, Baugh said. The district has about 8 of the 12 acres it needs in Alpine, but negotiations for the rest of the land have been difficult, he said. One property owner was willing to donate land to the district and another was willing to sell to the district, Alpine Mayor Don Watkins said. But both wanted the Alpine City Council to grant a lower density zone than normal in return, he said. The council didn't want to grant those requests, Watkins said. 1 r:, fc Today: High 65, Low 39 Tomorrow: Low 40 3R COPTfl Church effers services Attorneys for convicted Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh were ordered Monday to pay a $12,600 fine for going over the allowed number of pages in their appeal of McVeigh's conviction and death sentence.
