Show fgc 22 tome Magazine, THE DAILY HERALD, Friday, October 16, 1998 Minor bulbs can have major impact in gardens By NANCY BRACHEY Newspapers Knight-Riiid- Sure, you know daffodils. Sure, you know tulips. Sure, you know hyacinths. But do you know allium, ieucojum and muscari? Get to know these bulbs, despite their oddball names. Their shape an alliums round purple globe atop a slender stem is often different, an exciting contrast to the trumpet-shaped yellow daffodil. Their style a fritillaria's nodding bloom patterned with checks purplish-pinmakes a charming alternative to solid-colo- r tulips and crocuses. Their colors intense blues of muscari and bluebells keep the blue season going after the hyacinths and softens the bold yellows, reds, pinks and oranges of spring. Perhaps you don't know these flowers because they and a host of others rank in the large category of bulbs often called minor, secondary or little. Gardeners often overlook them in the race for the better-knowtulips, daffodils and hyacinths. But they make dramatic or secondary accents in flower beds. Or scatter the smaller types particularly the earliest bloomers, such as snowdrops, winter crocuses or winter aconites informally around trees or shrubs. Then let them surprise you with winter bloom as you're dashing off to work in the chill of February. frit-illari- k n bloom from late spring to early summer.
