Whirling disease research is moving at a pace that is surprising its state coordinator in Montana, and tests of some partial solutions could begin by the spring of 2000. Dick Vincent, whirling disease coordinator for the state Fish, Wildlife and Parks Department, has led a lonely crusade against the disease for years. But in the four years since the disease was first found in prime Montana trout water, resources have swelled. He now leads a small army of federal, state and university researchers, conducting a dozen different studies. i "I'm really impressed with where we seem to be going," Vincent said. "I ' really didn't think we'd be this far already. ... We've already produced a ton of good data that will go a long way in helping us." Whirling disease is a parasitic infection of trout. It warps their cartilage, so infected fish swim erratically, often in circles, the source of its name. ; Whirling disease does not kill ; by itself, but its victims tend to ; be easy prey and have difficulty chasing food, both fatal traits. ; But researchers already have ; theorized some solutions, some ; of which may be ready for testing as early as spring 2000. ; "I have a lot of hope that we're ' not that far away with some solutions that could make a dif-- ; ference," Vincent said. He said research has shown that trout are most vulnerable in ; ; ; ; ; Gala opeping for world's costliest hotel !!!!""UHMIIIIH Mil ii ail duce spectacular water displays. Researchers now are looking at ways to nudge trout to spawn earlier, and are having some success, Vincent said. They also have concluded that ihigh, cold mountain streams are unlikely to be affected by the disease. They also are looking at the redband rainbow, the only native rainbow trout in Montana.
