(AP) Lycos Inc., a major internet search engine, is not renewing au advertising contract with Jews for Jesus. Lycos, of Waltham, said the ad appeared on the computer screen when the word "Jewish" was typed during Web searches. It read: 'The end of the world is no time to finally realize Jesus is the Messiah. (It's all in the book.) Click here for a free copy!" At the click, a Jews for Jesus Web page appeared. The group, founded in the 1970s, claims 70,000 followers nationwide. It practices Judaism but regards Jesus as the Messiah. The $1,700 ad had been running since July 6. Jeffrey Snider, general counsel for Lycos, said the contract was not renewed because of complaints and because "controversial advertising is bad for business." Among its opponents were the League's Boston office. Diane Kolb, associate director, said she believed the message was misleading and blasphemous. "Jews can't be for Jesus," she said. Susan Perlman, spokeswoman for Jews for Jesus, said the group was disappointed that the message was restricted. "The Web is supposed to be marketplace for all kinds of ideas," she said, "and people can click on them or pass a them by." HIGHER Continued from C8 Today the vast majority of Jains (about four million total) live in India. Although there are few Jains in the United States (perhaps 25,000), the teachings of Mahavira have had a fundamental, though indirect impact on our nation. When in the 1960s Martin Luther rung was considering methods for attaining civil rights for Black Americans, his choice of nonviolent civil disobe- dience was in part influenced by Gandhi's successful nonviolent rebellion against British rule in India 20 years earlier. Gandhi, of course, had derived his ideas of nonviolence from ancient Indian religious traditions, and the father of was Indian nonviolence Mahavira. Indirectly, then, the course of the American Civil Rights movement was decisively Influenced by the teachings of a 2500 year-olIndian mystic. represents a classic example of. the remarkable phenomenon in the history of religions, that religious beliefs d can transcend culture, language, time and space, transforming the world we live in across thousand of years and tens of thousands of miles. : Further Reading: P.
