Show W THE DAILY HtRALD. Provo, Utah, Saturday, August 21, Page A2 So we like to help out, enough already! What is Utah's favorite thing about itself? Anyone? Put your hand down, .Jlorshack, I can't see you. myth. New Yorkers live in abominable conditions and treat each other with open contempt, but justify it with their own myth that only the toughest people can handle the stress of living in the most demanding city in the world. Most large cities feature some variation on this "only the strong survive" myth. Have you ever noticed how Southern Californians are almost proud of their smog and traffic? "You call this a traffic jam? Back in California..." These local myths serve a vita! purpose. Besides giving people an excuse to live in the most urban wastelands, they provide an undertone against which each individual can gauge his own harmony with the local mindset. People feel at home in areas whose communal myth resonates with their own personal myth. and Put into this light compared with the absurdity of glorifying urban blight Utah's myth strikes me as an extremely positive one. If, by MANIC IMPRESSIONS? Utah's favorite thing about itself is the uncommon eagerness of its residents to support each other in times of trouble. .Whether it's filling sandbags in the spring, or cutting in the summer, or digging out in the winter, Utahns Jove to lend a helping hand. (I omitted autumn, as God has (decreed it a season for football, not natural disasters.) In the wake of last week's .. tornado and last month's , fire-.brea- jc Robert Hughes , but I think toward I'm in just under the wire). The fact is, Utah does have a history of collective, coordinata hised response to crisis celeto we've chosen that tory brate and honor and take on as part of our myth about ourcliche-dom- .Kiverdale flood, we've been hearing a lot about how great we are at pulling together and pitching in. In fact, I've read and heard so many news sto- ries that feature this selves. Every geographical unit best defined today as a local television market has a myth about itself. Next time you meet someone from somewhere else, ask them what people from their geographical unit are like, and why. The answer should reveal, at least indirectly, that place's self- - feel-goo- back-pattin- God-forsake- n g that I'm going to officially declare it a cliche (anyone has the authority to declare something a cliche, as long as like Scrabble). they're right Of course, the reason it has become a cliche is that it is based in truth (this observation itself is well on its way . believing that we demonstrate some unique combination of neighborliness and we can attract and cultivate that 6pirit in our populace, then I'm all for it. But let's quit talking about it on the news, OK? It is quickly becoming trite, and in the context of Turkey floundering to recover from their own, far more devastating catastrophe, it comes across as somewhat smug. While I'm on the topic, allow me to say one last thing about Utah cliches: Can we drop the green Jell-- thing? I haven't been to a ward potluck in some time, but I've got to believe that anyone who brings Jell-- salad is silently congratulating himself on being such a wickedly rebellious ironist. If SLOC has turned it into a pin, go ahead and assume that it's no longer biting social satire. 0 e Rob Hughes is a columnist living in Provo. free-lanc- t robhughesl00earth-link.ne- 1-- ---- om Stop -- i i i i 1 r I .jf lAHY TWIH iMUawftma' j SET.1 ! i i i i i taNiitiiilhi , i i i i CU.il ssr epp ' Stcfy Cwhbm! The Utah Professional Practices Advisory Commission investigates complaints against educators and makes recommendations to the Utah State Board of Education. Generally, the complaints affect student safety and the recommendations can include revoking teaching credentials. The settlement will be paid for under the state's liability insurance policy, said Mike Jacobsen, district superintendent. "It's my definite opinion that there wasn't religious discrimination," Jacobsen said. "To me, the case never had any merit. The settlement of the case was for purely financial reasons.
