DALLAS Airlines, wh'icM save money when they tickets directly to customers' ojJ their Internet sites, are shaj" ing some of the savings witw travelers for a limited time.' Led by Delta Air Lines Inc., a number of U.S. airlines arc offering an extra 10 percent off ttcR many ets bought through the carriers' own Internet reservatipli ' ' systems. The Internet discounts havV prompted a trade group, thr American Society of TrriVei Agents, to complain to the fed eral government that the practice discriminates against peo" ple without computers. But airlines say they're simply trying to find the most effi' '' cient way to sell tickets. "There's incredible cost distribution savings by going through the Internet. It's up'to four times cheaper for Delta' to sell a ticket over the Internet site than to go through a traditional travel agency," said Bill Reeves, Delta's general manag.1 ' sales. er of "We want to be able to shatle those cost savings with our customers. That's the essence '! of the sale," he said. Delta launched the 10 percent discount last week just as Northwest Airlines Inc. started an airfare sale for fall travel; both the 10 percent discounts and the fare sale have beeii extended through Friday, ftlbsit airlines have matched D2ti and Northwest's promotions, The airlines let people troweling on tickets get a double benefit !bj? booking directly on Internet e k ! sites. For example, Delta's $204 sale fare between Dallas-For- t Worth and Salt Lake City drps to $184 when booked on the company's Internet sitei For Delta, the strategy 3 a different way to reduce distribution costs, which represent about 15 percent of an average airline's costs, analysts say. Delta led other airlines in 1995 when it capped travel agent commissions, and other airlines have adopted further reductions in commissions. Delta also drew fire in January when it adopted a $1 surcharge each way on tickets not bought on its Web site. It withdrew the surcharge two weeks later when no other airlines followed its lead. The society of travel agents, which criticized the surcharge because it penalizes travelers without computers or Internet access, levied the same criticism at the Delta-le10 percent discounts for Internet bookings. "The American public is entitled to full and equal access to all fares, regardless of the technology to which they have access," ASTA President and Chief Executive Officer Joe Galloway said in a letter to U.S. Transportation Secretary Rodney Slater last week. ASTA spokesman James Ashurst said Tuesday that the Internet sales are conditioning travelers to look only at individual fares, rather than compare all fares as a travel agent does. "These Internet fare sales are not going to last forever," he said. American Airlines, which pioneered the use of Ihe Internet with weekly Internet-onlsales, was late to join the 10 percent discount parade.'; Spokesman Tim Smith said American typically tries to target its sales for such limited periods as weekends and y hpli-day- s. nnn-n- LAA UL Hems. Do you have a strategy for buying and selling? Are you the type who can stick to a strategy? If you answer no to all of these questions, a better move may be to buy an index fund and forget it.
