REVIEW might be the place to draw the line. Since "Scream," Williamson has had one idea: Teen-ager- s riu" Leigh Ann (Katie Holmes) needs an A in Tingle's history class to win a school scholarship that will go to the class valedictorian. Leigh Ann gets emotional support from Jo Lynn (Marisa Coughlan) and finds herself attracted to rough but hunky Luke (Harry Watson). But when Luke steals are systematically destroyed, usually for no reason, by a psy- cho (or psychos). Eventually, they band together to turn the tables. This notion has carried him through "Scream," "Scream 2," "I Know What You Did Last Summer," "The Faculty" and his current endeavor. "Tingle" is certainly the least bloody, and Williamson is clearly aiming for something mure serious than usual. But he's hampered by his juvenile attitude: Adults are demonic at worst and ineffectual at best, they've tied her to her bedposts, and the situation snowballs from bad to cursed. Watson C"th Heaven") plays a stock heart and Coughlan has only a little more to do as the usual gal pal. Michael McKean and Jeffrey Tambor turn up as the school's principal and the football coach, further emphasizing the clownishness of adults. For all his vaunted understanding of teen psyches. Williamson deals mostly in cliches, as if high schoolers weren't smart enough to appreciate anything subtler. u fjf'tr f iff h Nor does he play fair with us. We spend the whole movie hoping Ix'igh Ann will earn that elusive A and her scholarship, only to find out that she can get the money whether she gets the A or not! Williamson breaks a cardinal rule of good writing: Audiences will play by any rules you choose to establish, but you can't change them in the bottom of the ninth inning. a copy of Tingle's final exam so he can cheat on the test, Tingle decides to punish all three. They go to her house that night to exonerate Leigh Ann and explain that only Luke was guilty. When Tingle won't hear reason, Luke threatens her with a crossbow.
