Yet, came this character. ' ' you'd be insane as a director not to utilize his improvisations. Director Chris Columbus had no problems when 20th Century Fox sent him the script of "Mrs. Doubtfire," which opened nationwide Wednesday. He knew right off he wanted to do the story of a divorced father, played by Robin Williams, who masquerades as an English nanny in order to fool his wife Sally Field and get close to his kids. He just wanted to make sure that Williams and the actor's wife and back-to-bac- producing partner, Marsha Garces Williams, would go along with the rewrite he envisioned. 'We all seemed to be in synch at the time," the director of the "Home Alone" films recalls in a telephone interview from his San Francisco office. "I went off for a couple of months and essentially rewrote the picture and sent it off to Robin, and he committed. ' ' Columbus wanted to make two main changes to the script. One could be handled fairly easily in the writing. "The most important aspect of (his picture was that we didn't lie to kids or anyone who had been through a divorce about what happens when you go through it," he says. "We didn't want any of the kids in the audience to say, 'Gee, it would be great if my parents got back together,' because in 99 percent of the cases it just doesn't happen. ' And I realiy wanted kids to see this and understand from it that just because they come from a divorced family, because they maybe live with just their mother or father or two mothers, two fathers or an aunt and uncle or grandmother, that their family was just as Ht-- v k, 4 AP Photo Fly away hands well-know- "The Healing Touch," by sculptor Tim Holmes is among 35 Holmes works on display at the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, Russia.
