That starts to feel almost degrading. I don't feel empowered." The 993 Academy Awards broadcast honored "The Year of the Woman," in a year recognized by most critics to be a lousy one for women in American films. Often the best that an actress can hope for unless she is one of the handful of women powerful enough to call their own shots is being "the wife," "the girlfriend" or "the victim." just an appendage to the male star of the' film. "I'm not part of the mainstream of actresses," says Slater, "so it's more so for me, being more on the outskirts. (There's a limit to) the kinds of roles you can get in films when you're just an actress, when you'ie not or creating, when you're not taking it in your own hands." Slater's role in the upcoming Fox Broadcasting film "1 2:0 1," July 5, is no ground-breakfor her, but it did have its compensations. The sciecc-fictio- n thriller stars Jonathan Silverman ("Weekend at Bcrnie's") as Barry, a personnel clerk at a high-tec- h company that is experimenting to develop a new energy soured Barry's Tuesday is not going well, from getting to work late to being the victim of a practical joke by a self-starti- er friend (Jeremy Piven) to making a fool of himself with Lisa (Slater), a scientist he admires. The day goes from bad to nightmarish when Barry sees Lisa gunned down in the company parking lot. But when Barry awakens the next day, he slowly conies to the real- ization that he's looped back to Tuesday morning, and he seems to be the only one aware of it. The company's experiment has gone wrong and created a "time bounce." Time will keep rewinding back to 2:0 a.m. on Tuesday forever, unless Barry can find a way to change what hap- pens. Robin Bartlett, Nicholas r. Surovy and Martin Landau co-sta- Says Slater, "In this version of 'Groundhog Day,' the whole thing is not to get me killed. The positive part of this role is that she's a scientist; she's a smart woman. She's a physicist dealing with subatomic particles, and that's pretty fancy for any woman in this day and age." Slater also has high "Jonathan praise for her r. Silverman is just so delightful and warm and lovely. He's so delicious, just this little twinkling, wonderful person. It was so much co-sta- fun being with him. The truth is, in this film it's really not a 'girlfriend' role. In terms of being 'the woman' in the film, Jonathan's just so giving. He's a very playful, fun actor to be with." But things are looking up for Slater. She has also completed a role in an upcoming Showtime feature, premiering July 8, called "Chantilly Lace," and she can hardly contain herself. "We're just so thrilled. It was so wonderful." Slater and six other actresses Lindsay Crouse, Jill Eikenberry, Martha Plimpton, Ally Sheedy, Talia Shire and JoBeth Williams - got together with director Linda Yellen and improvised the entire film, based on character sketches and a general plot outline by Yellen. The friends gather three times over the course of a year and explore the -- mundane, surprising and traumatic events that shape their lives. diaAlong with their logue, the women carried on the "We covexploration a. ered everything," says Slater, "from our mothers to sex to counseling to therapy, husbands, children, day care, issues of work, of getting older, of being in the business, of the books we read. I can't tell you what a mystical and special experience this was." A sequel to the film is in the planning stages. Meanwhile, Slater is working with husband Rob Watzke in their improvisa-tiona- l theater company and is painting her dreams and nature with close friend Helen Hunt ("Mad About You"). "When we're painting," she says, "I sit down and I immediately have an inspiration. I'm going with it, and I'll look up and Helen has her head in her hands, staring down at the paper in this existential, deep, deep, quiet funk.
