Show Page C2 - THE HERALD, Provo, Utah, Thursday, October 29, 1992 Personal ads are baloney .- r - Dear Ann Landers: Please advise women who are looking for male companionship or husbands not to waste time responding to personal ads in papers and magazines. I am a widow in my early 60s, and I have answered at least 25 of those ads. They are all a bunch of baloney. Men who run those ads do not really want to get married. They are just looking for someone to sleep with or somebody with money who will take care of them. One man who advertised himself to be 70 confessed that he was 83 but thought he LOOKED 70. His wife had been dead three weeks. He said upfront that he has no interest in getting married because he has four children and wants to leave everything to them, but he would like a woman who is "friendly." (Continued from Page CI) Knitting was discovered and men began wearing tights. For the next 600 years, nen designed their fashions to emphasize their legs the part of the body that determined their manliness. In the 1300s, English women emulated who they felt was the most important woman of all by Mary, the mother of Jesus wearing dresses that made them look pregnant, Adams said. Some dresses were cut long in front; a woman would bunch her dress up in her arms and arch her back to give the illusion of pregnancy. Others had a high waistline in front. Men in the 1400s wore tights that were two different colors to draw attention to their legs. Long, pointed shoes were worn to try and extend the legs. These shoes became so long, the tips were caught up by chains and attached to the top of the shoe so the man could walk without tripping. Pillows were used to pad the waist. Women of this time are shown with their hands on their the padding prevented hips women from placing them anywhere else. A costume from the play "The Merry Wives of Windsor" showed that the common man imitated the rich by stuffing the stomach area of his garment to make himself appear fat. Only the rich could afford to eat enough to gain a good pot belly. The last costume presented as part of the cavalcade is known as "the monster," Adams said. It is the coronation gown of Queen Elizabeth I which originally weighed 300 pounds, but in the cavalcade weighs only 75 pounds. The replica includes 300 yards of fabric smocked in the skirt, which is held up by metal rings. The large white ruff behind her head was used by Elizabeth to cover up a bald spot, Adams said, which was created when Elizabeth was ..a young girl and spent several years in jail sleeping on a straw mat after being rejected by her father the king. The original dress was so heavy that a stool was built inside the dress for Elizabeth to sit on. Oak poles were placed underneath her arms and used to carry her around. Elizabeth was hospitalized after wearing the dress for her coronation. She wore it so all the ambassadors of the world would go back to their countries and declare that Elizabeth had been magnificent, Adams said. Chicago Tribune Sometimes an error is also a hit. Next, keep in mind this excerpt from "The Woman's Dress For Success Book" by John T. Mollov (Warner Books, $4): "The rule for all businesswomen is to dress for the job you want, not the job you have. Polyester pantsuits, sweaters, slacks, skirt and blouse outfits, and dresses with large prints all announce that you have no ambition." in Molloy says a skirted suit dark but not dull colors shows that you strive for executive duties.
