In fact. LaVell Edwards' club could become a dow nright upright carpet bomber. Defensiely BVU should be at least equal to last year's squad. BYU should be touch against the run. quicker from sideline to sideline. And. optimistically speaking, sometime this season it will e at stopping the pass. two-a-day- Lm-p- ro BYU's young secondary (new safety , cornerbacks, nickle backs and reserv es) needs seasoning and confidence-buildin- g performances. With increased emphasis on pressuring the WAC's talented quarterbacks, this defense will get' burned at times, but may also deliver some knockout blows. The most exciting aspect of the 1992 Cougars is the offense. You wonder how an offense can be all that exciting when the NCAA's leading passer and total offense leader Ty Detmer has taken his skills to the NFL. Well, hang on to your helmets and oxygen masks, and buckle up for a high altitude strafing raid. BYU will unleash an end zone-to-en- d zone scheme that observers have not seen in Cougar Stadium all-ti- for vears. Well, BYU will if it works. You see. BYU's young experienced sophomore quarterbacks have to come through in order for the scheme to work. And so far John Walsh and Steve Clements k are battling it out for the chance to turn from novice and QB embryro to triggerman and rocket launcer. neck-to-nec- Potentially, can make big, big plays. .Where Detmer excelled in the 10- - to offense w ith an occassional big play breaking lose for big gains, these two can produce plays in seconds. That capability forces defenses to play the entire field. They can't afford to shorten up zone coverages and sneak up on the offense by rolling up the exposable and vulnerable yardage. With these guys, all yardage is vulnerable. (and potentially is the key word), Clements and Walsh have the arms to stretch a defense. Both can throw the 'ong ball and do it with fire. Both are accurate, both are capable and both FOR HEALTHY BABIES... JfBIL 80-ya- rd Or, more acurrately. potentially more vulnerable. With an additional weapon available in the running of Jamal Willis, junior college transfer Kal-i- n Hall and freshman Hema defenses will need to keep linebackers near the line of scrimmage. This, again, forces an opponent to respect more real estate w ith this Cougar offense. Feeding this offensive scheme, or the opening up of the old Cougar offense, is a corps of receivers as deep and as talented BYU has produced. Potentially, and if the "ifs" are dotted and crossed. Air Edwards will have a new and scary look in 1992. Hei-mui- QUARTERBACKS d Walsh, a sophomore backed up Ty Detmer 210-poun- but saw limited action.
